For any of you folks who've recently built or re-sided your home, what kind of siding did you decide to go with and why?

Currently, we have to decide between vinyl and stucco(the two most common sidings in our climate), and I can't decide which to go with. Vinyl is cheaper, probably easier maintenance, and a little more durable. While stucco is slightly more fire resistant, looks a little classier, and insulates better during winter.

Any opinions would be appreciated!

edit-forgot to mention where I live, if the climate is a factor. Up in SK, Canada, about 4-5 months a year of -20C weather and 3 months of +30C. Do either of the two take better to large temp variances like that? One reason I'd like stucco is the heat insulation, I guess.

For what it's worth I've heard of problems selling stucco houses because unless it's applied right you can get major moisture issues. Or maybe that was dryvit. Well actually I think dryvit is a kind of stucco. Hmm, sorry I can't help :)

You could tear down part of the walls and brick that bad boy :D

I was actually just reading up about it, and that was one of the bigger issues they had with stucco in the past. And perhaps even recently.
The producers of stucco seem to think they've worked out the kinks of ventilation and whatnot, but I can see that being an issue with wood rot if the install isn't perfect or whatever. Not good.

Be prepared to Pressure wash your house a minimum of twice a year, three times if in a rainy area.

Interesting.

My house has Aluminum siding as have all my parent's houses and we've never washed it.

Is the maintenance of vinyl different than aluminum in some way?

That being said we live in a desert as well....

Thanks for the opinions, guys!

Is the reason for stucco being more expensive mainly due to the installation cost? I'd imagine it'd be a more complicated process.

I think I might be back on the vinyl bandwagon, not sure yet. :)

The only thing I don't like about vinyl is how cheap is usually looks - I'd rather have a better looking siding that I'll have to replace then go with vinyl siding :disgust:
