i don't like the two-tier central space, but i am very much a fan of office furniture.

my desk at work can be easily and solidly raised to almost excessive size, and i would love to have the same at home. great surface too.

just google used office furniture and see what deals they have. these desks are so robust they simply don't age.

My last full time job they replaced the two best desks in the place, the CEO's and one of the other top managers. I spotted them arranging to have those great hardwood desks removed and I asked if I could have the smaller one (the big one was too large for me). I called a friend and borrowed her truck and I've had the desk ever since. It's really nice with very smooth sliding drawers, accommodates 2 monitors, my midtower's keyboard, a laptop, my AV receiver, NAS, a few other small gizmos.

I have shelving above the desk that I made myself from scratch.

If you are even a little handy you can build a custom desk out of wood and steel pipe pretty easy.

One day I spotted a desk that someone had left out on the curb. I brought it home in my station wagon and adapted it to be a workbench in my tool/work room. I extended the legs, making it around 10" higher, attached a veneer on top, a wood vise, a bench vise and have shelving sitting at the back. It beats any workbench I've seen, and has real nice sliding drawers at either end. At the bottom I added custom shelving where I stow my power tools.
