Hey guys... long time. :beercheers:

What office chairs do you recommend?

I'm thinking about going for a used Aeron or an Embody as I do need to keep myself in comfortable positions and it needs to work for a 6'3 220 guy.

Are there others you would suggest that offer the same functionality/support?

Hi Lifers!

Almost two decades ago I lucked out and got an $800 Hon office chair for ~$180 when it went discontinued at Office Depot. It failed on me a year ago (no complaints as I got the miles out of it) and ordered a new Hon office chair from an office supply company. The foam armrest have already cracked. So much for spending $450 on another $800 MSRP chair. I guess that is how the world has degraded in quality.

Definitely Embody: (over the Aeron)

http://gizmodo.com/5071571/herman-miller-embody-review-the-best-chair-weve-ever-sat-on

Sit4life (formerly Sit4less) is one of the best resellers:

http://www.sit4life.com/products/Herman-miller/Embody-chair/534

http://www.sit4life.com/products/Herman-miller/Embody-chair/558

Lots of configuration options. Coupons available here:

https://www.retailmenot.com/view/sit4life.com

Otherwise, hit up Staples, find a comfortable chair, then hit up Walmart & get a cheap memory foam sitting pad.

I can't spend the $1,200 on a new Embody chair. I am however looking at used.
- Bay Area has a lot of used Herman Miller chairs from the startups that overspent :)

I can find slightly used Aeron's for $400. Embody's are typically around $600.

Thoughts on that?

Aeron's are great, my last boss had one. Embody's are rated even better. Any place locally you could try one out? $200 is a lot of money, but for a 50% cost savings over new, that's a pretty awesome deal.

The thing with chairs tho, and furniture in general, is that everyone is different. You need to try it out to see if it really works for you. Like, I bought a new couch last year & tried out a TON of them. Ended up with a $599 model from Big Lots of all places, which I LOVE. Very comfortable for me, whereas there were some $2,000 to $4,000 couches that I wouldn't have taken even for free, haha.

I do believe in investing in ergonomics...a good bed, good shoes, good chair, and for me, an ergonomic keyboard (yay carpal!). We sit, sleep, stand, and walk in this stuff all day long, so it's worth investing in for your body, especially if you're already suffering from aches & pains.

Yea, after the chair, my next purchase is going to be my KVM for the desk.

That will be followed by a new bed and mattress at some point (probably Latex)

I picked up one for $5 at a rummage sale. True story. I'm sitting in it now.
No hydraulic lift underneath so it can't possibly sink to the floor. Arm rests are losing their outer upholstery - nice cloth layer below though. Some no name brand probably.

About two months ago I got a SlickDeals alert for an office chair for $10 (incorrectly priced during a sale). Ordered two and picked them up a week later. I'm sitting in one right now. Never realized how genuinely comfortable a simple mesh back could be on a chair. Surprisingly, I also like the unadjustable arms, which don't rattle around like adjustable ones. Nothing special about the seat, but it's comfy for me. The chair is light but feels very solid. For $10, I couldn't be happier.

I bought a mesh backed chair from Costco for around $100. The seat is also mesh. Don't like it. The support and position is fine. But the mesh is very uncomfortable on your skin when sitting in your chair shirtless and on your legs when in boxers. Obviously I don't have this chair at work.

I got mine off the trailer by the barn. Don't know the brand, but it's the best one in the office. I'd look there. It's just past the riding arena.

If you don't mind a 90%-as-good solution for your bed (for 50% of the cost!), I just bought a couple new beds:

https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/my-bed-in-a-box-was-just-delivered.2444274/page-3#post-38543228

The top online brands right now (for bed-in-a-box) are ones like Casper, Leesa, etc., which for a Queen size, all go for around $800-ish, depending on the sales, discount codes, and gift cards being offered at the time. However, there are some beds that are almost as good for like half the price...complete with frames & sheets. Suggestions:

1. Bed frame: Zinus 14" or 18", depending on how much storage you want underneath. The 18" is awesome because you can store a bunch of crap in bins underneath. A little bit higher to get into bed tho. Running start helps ;) You will also need a non-skid pad (see thread, ~$30 for a King-sized anti-skid sheet) because these are metal frames that allow the mattress to slide otherwise. They are very supportive & don't need a box spring. Also, super easy for one person to assemble. I had my Queen frame built by myself in about 10 minutes...it folds down, has a couple locking levers, and a couple pieces to screw the split frames together. The most expensive model (18" King-sized) is only $140, no joke.

2. Mattress: I'm a fan of memory foam, VERY comfy. The Zinus Green Tea memory foam mattress that I got is also super budget-friendly at all sizes...for example, $350 for a King-sized. It was a little firm for my tastes, so I picked up a 3" gel topper. That's a bit squishy for my tastes; I have a 2" on a twin bed I have & that's more of the right amount of softness for me. A King-sized 3" gel topper is $95. So assuming you're going big, $140 for the frame, $30 for the no-skid pad, $350 for the mattress, $95 for the topper = $615. Frame, non-skid pad, 12" foam mattress, and 3" gel topper for nearly $200 less than just an online mattress...pretty good deal! I have a Bob's Discount memory foam bed, which is more on-par with the Casper & Leesa, and again, I would say this setup is like 90% as good...for a ton less.

3. Sheets: Mellanni has nice sheets (in various colors) for $33 a set (I like them better than the Amazon Basics ones). You should also absolutely buy a waterproof fitted sheet because liquids stay in foam mattresses forever & are impossible to get out. Malouf & Lucid both offer good covers (it goes right on top of your mattress, then you put your regular sheets on like normal...and no, they don't make any noise like the old plastic "wet your bed as a kid" protectors did). Those go from $35 to $50 a pop. I recommend getting a pair of each (put the second set on while you're washing your first set, or if someone gets sick in bed, you'll have clean emergency sheets available). On the high side, $166 for 2 sets of sheets & waterproof protectors (note that those are machine-washable too!).

4. Misc.: You'll need a blanket, some pillows, etc. Nova Duvet has a duvet (blanket) cover that looks like a folded sheet, so all you have to do is toss it on your bed & it already looks like you made it - pretty class (it's expensive tho). Nest Pillows makes really good pillows (memory foam strands or something), although those are $99/ea (I've been through a ton of pillows & those, while being the most money I've ever spent on pillows, are working pretty well so far...I'll update that other thread in a few weeks once I've had more time with them).

But yeah...quick addition says $781 for:
  • 18" King frame & non-skid pad
  • 12" King foam mattress & 3" gel topper
  • (2) sets of sheets & waterproof sheets
Also, the mattress arrives in a box, vacuum-sealed. You slice open the packaging & let it decompress for a day or two to full size & voila, a nice comfy bed. I would try out the bed before ordering a gel topper to see if the firmness suits you or not. They also sell other beds (pillowtop etc.) for pretty reasonable prices. No having to go to a mattress store, no spending $500+ for a mattress locally or $800+ for an online model, etc.

I think he gets paid to post here. Sure spends a lot of time on details.

How else do you think I became an official ATOT Baller? Someone's gotta pay my bills!

Sounds like you either have a bed wetting problem or you're into some kinky stuff. I'd recommend confining that sort of thing to the shower. Haven't gotten a mattress wet since I was 7.

They're great if you have kids (who wet the bed or barf in bed) or if you eat in bed. Spilled OJ will never come out otherwise. Not that I know. Or anything. :(

But seriously, if you're going to spend hundreds on a nice mattress, pony up the thirty bucks to protect it. I did not do that on my first one & regret it.

Aren't waterproof mattress covers "krinkly" though? Never used one.
