Home office chair to get?

I'm in the market for a new home office chair, but do not know what chair to get. Any advice is welcome.

I have an IKEA Volmar with headrest, works for me.
Costs more than Markus but it has a leather back instead of mesh and looks neater.

I've got a Humanscale Freedom. It has treated me well.

I'm thinking about switching to a Sally Saddle though.

Number three on your list.

I think that's the one I have and I love it. It's like one of my favorite work office chairs and I think I got it for $80 on sale.

I've tried the executive and mesh chairs and find them too elaborate or big. The mesh chairs I've sat in in offices were comfortable, but I can't help but feel one stray zipper or pen poking a hole into it.

Leather's easier to wipe down. If you have a cloth chair, you just need a vacuum cleaner with brush attachment though. Leather probably handles spills better.

I've purchased like four home office chairs from Costco and Staples, and everyone of them has been a piece of crap. The latest one is only about a year old and the cylinder leaks so that the height of the chair can't be maintained.

I've come to the conclusion that you can't get a good chair for $125. My next replacement will probably be a Herman Miller or something else with good construction and ergonomics. I expect it will cost $400-600.

I bought a decent chair from Costco over 10 years ago. It's manufactured by Lane, and I'm guessing I paid in the $75 to $120 range for it. It sit in it probably 10 hours a week, and it's held up very well.

Had an issue a couple of years ago when a rubber bushing went bad. It would either groan or squeek when I'd spin around in it. Took it apart and found what was wrong, bought a replacement off ebay, cleaned and lubed, and no problems afterwards.

It's like the only "furniture" that I owned when I was in grad school, and I've still got it.


Also, I'm not a big fan of the mesh chairs. The ones I've sat don't feel supportive; maybe the ones my company buys are cheap and you need to spend >$600 to find a fantastic one.

I have an Aeron at work and I love it. They go for about $900 new on Amazon or $400-500 used on Craigslist.

I bought a Steelcase Leap for my home office and didn't really like it. It's supposed to be comparable (some say better) than the Aeron. This chair also costs $900 new on Amazon, but you can find them for $300 used on Craigslist.

(I think I would have liked the Leap if I was a larger person).

I sold my Leap and bought this chair from Office Depot for $300. I think it's 80% as good as the Aeron for 1/3 the price.

Like Markbnj I came to the conclusion that the cheap OfficeMax/Staples chairs just were not cutting it. Some part of the chair would eventually break down and I'd either have to fix it or replace it with another chair. That and being a somewhat tall person (6' 2" approx) I've found that a lot of the chairs simply aren't comfortable for me. So this time around I decided not to cheap out and purchased a decent office chair, this is the one I ended up with a Hon VL705. I've found that the mesh back that it has offers plenty of support while giving the air circulation I like for when I'm doing extended sessions on the PC. The chair is also very sturdily built and I strongly doubt I'll have to repair or replace it at all, if so it's covered by a 10 year warranty.
