Ok - I just set up a small home network involving my two computers in adjacent rooms. If I use a patch cable to connect the second computer to the router (ie wire running in middle of floor) I have no problems. However, if I try to use the cable I installed in the wall, the router seems to recognize there is a connection (2nd port lights come on) but I cannont access network. The connected the cable in the wall in a "straight" configuration that I punched down into the terminal. Should I have wired it "crossover" or is it a problem with my actuall connections (punchdowns)?

you should wire it straight, so it sounds like you might just have problems with all of the pins actually making the connection somewhere along the way.
