running Win98 and Win98se on 2 PCs at home that I am networking to play games

what IP addresses should I specify?

what about subnet?

maybe someone could link me a good place to find basic networking info for the home PCer?

Also, does it help to have identical NICs for the 2 PCs?
I have a 5 port Linksys switch, should I get Lynksys cards?
I want to optimize the transfer.
 
Usually, people use IP addresses in the 192.168.1.xxx range.

Subnet 255.255.255.0

Nics do not need to be identical and do not need to match your hub.

If your nics are 10/100, make sure your hub is also 10/100 (to maximize your transfer).

I think that both the LinkSys and NetGear site have Networking 101 pages, your job: find them! 🙂

How you connect to the internet may be an issue if you are running a cable modem and/or expect to share the connection between the two PCs.
 
The 192.168.x.x and 10.x.x.x address ranges are designated as home/internal network addresses, and are safe to use as they will never be used on the Internet. Personally, I like to use the address range 10.20.30.x, just because it's REALLY easy to remember, and I think it looks kinda cool.. 😛
