ok up till an hour ago I was using a router for my internet shairing needs. but this posed the problem of me and my roommate needing acess to the same ports. (bit-torrent mainly but thier are others). well a friend of mine works for the cable company and he informed me that they allow up too 5 unique ips per account. so I pulled out my old 10mb 16port switch to test it to see if everything will be fine if I plug my modem and 2 rigs into it.

As far as the internet it works great both systems have different ips, and torrents work fine on both rigs (no fighting over who gets the ports each night). but now we can't acess eachothers systems over the network (shared drives, printers...etc) while I expected this is thier anyway short of doubling up the network and installing a second nic in both rigs?

ended up just doubling up the network. the switch is used just for me and my roommates computers and I added an extra nic to both systems and used that as the second network with onther switch.
