Home Network

I know next to nothing about networking. I have two computers in my house that I would like to network together so that we can share a DSL connection. A friend of mine says that you can connect two computers together by just connecting the Ethernet cards. This doesn't seem like it would work, wouldn't I need to get a hub or some other device? Any suggestions?
Thanks

First of all, you need a device with which to share the DSL.

This can be either one of your existing machines or a router.

Router:
- DSL into router
- Router connected to hub
- both machines connected to hub

One of the PCs as a router:
- DSL into PC, via a NIC
- PC connect to other PC via NIC
(this solution requires one PC to have 2 NICs)

Router advantages:
If the router is on, you always have a connection
Fast
Doesnt depend on another machine.

Router disadvantages:
Cost

PC Router advantages:
Cost saving
One less box

PC router disadvantages:
The Router PC must be on for the other PC to have DSL access
If the router PC fails, then there is no access for either PC.

Anything else? feel free to PM me.
