Hello,
I just got a roadrunner cable modem today and I want to be able to share it between to computers.
Right now the Modem is hooked up through USB as the Ethernet Card that came with the kit is only 10mbps.
I was wondering if I could hook these two computers up through a wireless solution. Would this be as fast as a normal wired solution?

The installer told me to get a router and have an electrician run the ethernet cable from one room to the other and to designate one computer as the server. What Kind of equipment would be involved with this.

It seems like the wirless solution would be the easiest, but I am going for whichever solution is the fastest in terms of speed.

Thank You, any help will be greatly appreciated.

oh and the two computers I am considering networking together have differnet OS's
one has Win 98 1st edition and the other has ME.

Concerning the Internet, RR service is usually 2-4Mb/sec. From Internet point of view 10Mb/sec is more then adequate. BTW, 10Mb/sec. NIC is faster then USB.

Wireless solution is currently 11Mb/sec. Max.

If your Network is going to be Wireless, you can use the 10Mb/sec card that RR gave you. Since your network will run at that speed anyway. If you plan a cable Network, you better off buying a 10/100 card ($10-$15).

Windows98, ME, NT, 2000, XP they all talk over Ethernet one to the other.

If you want to know more about Wireless read this:

My friend advised me to get a Netgear RT314 router and two 10/100 ethernet cards.. and then have an electrician run the cat 5 cable through the wall.. is this the best solution?

It is cheaper and faster then Wireless (provided it is done correctly).

You have to get some one who knows CAT5 wiring.
