I can get to files on the xp machines from the 2000 professional machine, but cannot access files on the 2k machine from the xp machines.

is there a way to do this?

for the xp machines I had to disable the windows internet firewall, but could not figure out how to do this on the win2k machine if this is in fact the problem.

also, should i be concerned about having the firewalls down as far as virus/hacker risk or whatever? is there a safer way to network without buying anymore hardware or software? all 3 pcs are connected to a router which is connected to a cable modem

thanks!

the 2k wont have an integrated firewall, but it might have a software firewall.

Most importantly, have you enabled file sharing in 2K?

With the firewall, you should be able to configure it so that you can allow internal network connections. Look in the options.

Have you created a user on you 2k box that has the same login and password that you are using on your xp box? From my limited knowlage (someone please correct me if i am wrong) you need to have a user set up on your 2k box to allow someone to connect to it

qrilock, i have no problem connecting tot he 2k machine from the xp one. I just can't get it to work the other way around

I have enabled filesharing in network connections on the 2k machine, and there is no non-windows firewall installed, still no dice.

ideas?

Ok, i got it backwards, but as far as i know ther revers holds true, you need to have a user on the local machine to allow a remote machine to access files. At least that is the case in nt/2k/xp

thanks all

I figured it out. I had to browse to the 2k PC in windows explorer and enter my username and password. (previously I had been trying to add the pc or its shared folders as a network place)

what's the current concensus on windows 2000 versus windows XP, should I upgrade?
