Home network setup....domain controllers....webserver...

Hi,

I have a few general questions. I am setting up a network at home and would jsut like some recommendations on how I should set up the network. Here's what I have:

1)Abit BP6 (Dual Celeron 400's), 512mb ram
2)PII 350, 256 mb ram
3)p133, 32mb ram

I have various hdd's,nics, and ram could be interchanged b/w the two servers. These are the two computers I need to use as 1)Primary Domain Controller w/ Active Directory & DHCP & DNS 2)Web Server / FTP Server / Exchange Server / Internal File Server / Streaming Media Server

Which one should I use for each. I was thinking about using the PII 350 for the domain controller b/c it will have less load and very few hits on it. I'm takling about prob a 5 client network here. I figured teh bp6 would be better suited for the web/ftp/etc server b/c it will be getting way more hits/access. I will be using win2k server on each of them. I also have a p133 w/ 32 mb ram running coyote linux as my router. I wanted to fiddle with dhcp in windows so I plan on not enabling dhcp on the coyote linux router. My setup should look like this:

at&t cable modem-->coyote linux router--->switch---> (2 servers and approx. 5 win2k pro clients)

Does this sound good or would you recommend having the bp6 machine as the domain contrller w/ active directory. It would not be smart to use the 2nd computer as a web/ftp/exchagne server and a backup domain contrller correct, because of security issues? Thanks for any recommendations.

Hey,

Here are my suggestions, they are pretty much in line with what you had thought about doing already:

Dual Celeron 400's machine:

-IIS w/ Web and FTP Services Configured
-Exchange Server
-File Server, etc.
(If you have two identical hard drives, I would get a decent IDE RAID card (Promise Fastrak are nice) and put the two disks into a RAID 0 array. This will not give you any data redundancy, but it will GREATLY increase the disk access time and take some of the disk access proccessing burden off of the Celerons. This will make your File Sharing, Streaming Media, and overall end user performance MUCH better. BDC's don't really apply with Active Directory, unless you are going to be using it in mixed mode environment. Either way a BDC with only 5 clients and two servers is a bad idea. It would cause a lot of uneccesary chatter and resource utilization.)

PII 350 machine:

-PDC / Active Directory Root
-DNS
-DHCP
(If at all possible, put another 256MB of Memory in this box. Win2K server is extremely RAM hungry and you will have less problems if you can spare a few bucks for more memory. This machine will do fine handling your domain services.)

Sounds good. Looks like I pretty much had a good idea huh. Well any idea where I could pick up some pc66/100/133 ram for cheap?

Because you are putting the memory in a server that you don't want problems with, I wouldn't go down to Fry's and get the cheapest DIMM they have. Cheap memory can cause weird errors and problems... trust me. 😉

Micron - Crucial memory is relatively inexpensive and very reliable... I would highly recommend spending a few extra dollars on it.

figured so. I already have crucial in both my systems. I was thinking about just picking up some Kingston (i have heard it is pretty good ram) for a decent price from one of those rebate deals they've been having at BestBuy and places. Seems like crucial/micron still want an arm and a leg on their website. Might just pick some up on the fs/ft forums too. Thanks for the info.
