http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osi_model

Read and learn that, it is the OSI model and it explains the diffrent layers.

As far as managed switches go, how many PC's do you plan on putting on this network? If it is not that many, you dont need to waste money on a managed switch. Most of the things you would need to configure for a small home network can be managed through the routers config page anyway.

Edit: The wiki is kind of confusing if you dont know what you are doing, but for your purposes:
Layer 1: Physcial - The cables
Layer 2: Data Link - Switches
Layer 3: Network - Routers

I think you will do just fine with a nice Layer 2 unmanaged switch.

if you're going gigabit, might as well get one that supports jumbo frames. Dell PowerConnect 2716 is popular. in your case, management doesnt really matter (just so happens the Dell can do both).

"better" is a relative term, and isnt used by us technical people ;) what are your advertised upload/download speeds? that will probobly be the limiting factor, not your hardware.

hold off until everything is installed and see how it performs. if you feel the need, i recommend the buffalo WHR-HP-G54.

My advertised speeds are 2.5mbps down, and 256kbps up but I will upgrade to 8Mbps once it is available in my area (next year, I am told.. they have already started working on the lines...). I will see if I can get the Dell, I will ask my friend... I will be connecting 5 Desktops, a media center, a home server, and 2 laptops by wifi (and I will also be connecting my Brother MFC-440CN network printer, and my TV receiver (which has a lan port) to the network...).

I have tested the connection, and I DL/UL 3136/320 Kbps... not sure if it is temporary, or a first month thing, or if the ISP are actually being generous (well, here where I live, you can bargen the prices down, and the ISP tried to get me to sign so they added all kinds of extras, like the printer...)

What is Jumbo Frames?

EDIT
I just called my friend, and he said that he doesn't have any Dells, only D-links or some noname brand. He recommends the D-links. Any one know these D-link switches?

And again, thanks to everyone

dear christ

i had to check the thread when i saw how long it was...

i spent a year in a job where i *had* to make my own cables (and everyone is right when they suggest you do otherwise!) and *never* did i make a cable look as bad as these. not once. not even on my first attempt.

*shudder*
