Home Network Help?!

I am having some problems in setting up my home network. I have a Cisco 678 running in rfc1483 bridging mode linked into my 5 port Linksys in the uplink port. My network is running fine - I can see both computers in Network Neighbor and I can get both computer to get their own IP address- excpet they are IP's from my ISP- while I'm only allowed one. Do I need more than a hub to hook my computers into - a router? I dont think so because isnt my Cisco 678 is a router? How do I got about setting up my modem to give internal IP's to my computer? What about NAT? My ISP uses PPPoA.

Yes, you need to enable NAT, just like I already told you last time you asked about this.

Ahh..very true Russ...but the Cisco 678 wont let me enable it- It says something to the extent of nat is not configeral in rfc1483 bridging mode
Any ideas why?

I'm not familiar with your specific setup, but it sounds to me that your router is not routing, it's bridging the Ethernet port to the ATM PVC. If it's bridging, it can't do NAT, because there's no real boundry for the address translation...everything is being SAR'd and pumped down the ATM PVC.

I'm thinking you have (at least)three options: Buy another address, get another router (ala Linksys, SMC, etc) and NAT through that, or use ICS.

Buying another computer to use ICS isnt really temping. I really dont want to buy another IP. So that leaves me with a router. But which one? The 3 main ones seem to be : Netgear RT314, Linksys BEFSR41, or the SMC SMC7004BR.

Since Bridging is nothing more then a pass-thru directly to the ISP, it would make sense that you can't use NAT. Therefore, I've decided that bridging sucks.

Any of the routers you've listed will be just fine. I can personally confirm that the Linksys and the Netgear peacefully co-exist with the Cisco just fine. I've never used the SMC router, so I can't comment on it. Have used their switches, and love them.
