Hey,
I have a cable connection and 3 IP addy's from My ISP
I have been running a switch and wired cat 5 for a home
network (3 PC's running win XP Pro). I have been told, I should be running a router.
How will changing to a router affect my connection speed?
I currently do alot of online gaming, so I'm sure not looking to slow anything down.
Leave switch in place, or change to router?
pro's and con's?
Thanks for the input!

What was the rational giving to you about switching to a Router?

In a soho network, i don't think you will notice a speed difference regardless u use a router or switch.

Yeah he probably will Not.

However since he is probably making a living from Gaming, he might have a lot of grief from Port Opening and DMZ.

If thats the case. The PC that you host the games should be plug into the switch and the other 2 pc should be plug into the router that connects to one of the port in the switch. So the 2 pc will be protected.

yep, but since it hasn't been explicitly said i'll spell it out for ya... the router will probably have some sort of firewall software which can make hosting online games tougher (though possible if it supports dmz and you configure it correctly). however, you can avoid that problem by connecting as follows

cable modem --- switch------router----rest of network
.................................|
.................................|
..............................comp hosting online games

ignore the .'s.... the spacing wasn't right without them
