Home LAN; Auto assign IP's, or do the 10.0.0.1etc scheme?

I've got TCP/IP set up on my modem and my NIC, and NetBUI set to the NIC also. I believe that's right. However, under the TCP/IP properties I believe, it says auto assign IP, and manual IP or whatever. which would be better? I'd prefer to have static IP's on the network. Right now it's peer to peer, however it when we get it togother, it will be server-based, so people need ACCOUNTS! 😉 So what's the deal here...anyone understand what I'm sayin?

How many computers do you have and how are they connected? If it is just a network to be used in the office then you will have to manually assign IPs. You can assign the IPs to anything you want. You would only select "autoassign" if you have some sort of server connected to your machine that can assign these IPs. Some examples are if you have a cable modem, your ISP would/could automatically assign an IP to you. Or if you have a NT server running DHCP. But if you just want two comptuers to communicate with each other at home, then you would manually assign IPs.
 
Well, we're going to have about 20 computers when all is said and done, and we'll have a server by then. Right now it's just a peer-to-peer. I've decided to go from what I've seen on here Subnet: 255.255.255.0, and the IP's going 10.0.0.1 and up. I've installed TCP/IP, NetBUI, and IPX/SPX for the Network adapter. Seems to be working so far.
