Home Internet has been acting up for the past week. Off and On service. Suggestions?

We have TW RR and it has been pretty good ever since we had it. But starting last week, we've been having problems with Internet access. Some of the problems:

- Some pages will load just fine with no problems. Some will not load at all. Pages that WILL load often will show broken images about 80% of the time yet they still "work" regardless
- Most pages won't load at all. For example, I might be able to load Anandtech or The Car Lounge, but eBay, CNET, NewEgg etc. will not load at all.
- Sometimes it takes 5-10 refreshes to get pages to load (if they even load at all)
- Email will work sporadically
- AIM works sporadically

My roommates are having similar problems (three of us are on wireless, one is directly connected to the router).

We've tried restarting the cable modem and router several times (Belkin 54G which has been fine for months).

Strangely though, sometimes (like last night between about 12 midnight and 2:30AM) it was working just fine with no problems bringing up anything at all. Every page loaded instantly and everything was working perfectly. But then again, this morning, the same crap over again.

So could this be a network issue with Time Warner RR service? Should I call them up?

I'm no networking pro, but i believe in isolating problems.

Therefore, first you need to try using teh intarweb without the router for a while.

Of course, if the issues are still there, then you can call your ISP up & complain 🙂, since it likely is their issue anyway.

I would call them, it might be DNS issues or maybe you have squirrels chewing on your cable. But also try disabling the wireless capability of the router and see what happens then (on the wired system)? Close-by neighbors mooching your connection, perhaps?

I'll have to wait til tomorrow. Router is my housemate's closet and he's alseep right now.

I just had a feeling that it's the ISP though b/c for the past couple of weeks, cable service was off for about 5+ hours on two seperate occasions within the span of about two weeks.

That and the fact that the router has been pretty much trouble-free for a while now

Should check for a newer router firmware, also for moochers. Anyone in the place just get a new cordless phone or microwave? Both can interfere with wireless networks, though generally only when on.

Edit: damn typo gremlins got me again :|

Well, it's not just the wireless. It's the wired portion as well. Everyone is having problems.

I use wireless on my laptop
I use wireless for my desktop
One roomate uses wireless for his desktop
Two roommates directly plugged into the router with cabling

i had time warner cable also. first month or so it worked fine after that it would go down for maybe a minute or 24 hours i could never tell.imho its not as stable as dsl. since ive switched to dsl its been great ever since. yes dsl is slower but its more reliable then cable at least with my experience. my brother had similiar problems now he is moving to a new neighborhood where cable has just been installed so maybe it will work better for him over there im not sure. some homes still have the old cable wiring and i think thats not helping either.

Well, I just woke up (I don't know why I'm up so early) and everything is working just swell. I bet when I get back up in the morning it will be all screwed up again.

Its most likely on the providers end. Call and complain, and do it often till they resolve the problems your having.

Turn off the wireless part altogether as a fact-finding step if the issues come back. The question isn't whether the wireless works right for you, it's whether it's working right for the rest of your nearby neighbors who are downloading pr0n thanks to your handy wireless access point 😉 Is security enabled, and what level are you using?

Knowing Time Warner as I do, they're just going to blame it on your router and you're going to HAVE to get them to believe it's their problem.
