Home Insurance

We are shopping around for home insurance; who does everyone have their insurance through? I've heard that you can get a discount if you get insurance through your car insurance provider; I have Geico car insurance, and my fiancee has her car insurance through State Farm. When we get married in a couple of weeks, we'll switch to one that offers the better rate, and we'll also inqiure about home insurance.

Any recommendations?

Also, we did talk to State Farm for home insurance already. We got a quote; one thing that struck me as odd was that the rep kept asking us if our new house will have sprinklers. We said no, because we weren't aware of any, ubt she continuously insisted that all new homes have sprinklers. Anyone ever heard of anything like this?

I use state farm for auto and home. Haven't had any issues with them and have been using them for years.

We recently switched from American Family to Liberty Mutual. It lowered our premiums significantly and increased our limits as well.

Edit: For both auto and home

Allstate ... the quote was right in line with everyone else's and the office is right down the road.

GEICO for auto. Progressive for motorcycle.

First I have renters through State Farm. Second I work for a different P&C company (I got my current auto/renters before I started working here in my defense and I got a great rate with State Farm that mine can't touch).

The first thing you and your *soon to be* wife need to do is sit down, and realistically add up costs of things for your home. Walk through room to room keeping a running total to replace everything. Then add 10-20% on to that and get the limit that covers that much. Also write down any item you want special coverage on (wedding rings are usually in here, home theater stuff, electronics, etc. these are your high priced items usually). Anything you want this coverage on make sure to write down brand, type, size, model #, serial #, etc. Also bring in the receipt/appraisal of the item, so they can copy it for proof in their files.

Insurance limits will be divided up into different coverages. Make sure each limit is high enough to cover everything. Finally make sure to get replacement cost, not actual cash value. The difference is ACV will take the depriciated current value of the item (say your $3000 HDTV you just got is stolen in 3 years. You won't get $3000, but more like $800 or whatever the current market value is. Oh and this is usually based from online sources.), whereas replacement cost will cover whatever you paid for it (with the HDTV example you will get $3000). You will pay a bit more, but if you ever have a loss (theft, vandalism, fire, lightning, hail, etc) you will be very thankful.

As for the car/home stuff. Yes you will get a multi-line discount. Get home/auto/life/other insurance all through the same company. In my case I was able to get life basically for free because the added discount to auto from adding the 3rd line. Make sure to shop around, and talk to a few different agents. Talk to both exclusive (they only sell for one carrier) and independent (who sell for lots of companies). You will get different quotes most likely. Go with the cheapest that meets your requirements (and coverage limits needed).

Congrats on getting married 🙂
