Home Fleet problem, MSI with Tbird locked up

When I rebooted the machine, it just making a wound like an alarm or siren. No post. That's a machine that used to finish a workunit under 5 hours.

That's the second home machine that died. Over a week ago, a dual 700 died. It will be sometime before I can work on these machines.

Any idea on the cause of the siren/whaling sound?

A guy that works for me has a PC that did that the other day. It's an ASUS A7V with an Athlon 950 and Crucial PC133 RAM. He recently added a 2nd harddrive but the PS should still be fine with what's in there.

He turned it off for about 5 min. and then the alarm went away.

What's the m/b?

IsOs - I have an MSI (although not the 266 model) and they're sortof wacky sometimes. Try a couple things like clearing the CMOS (make sure you unplug the power cord from the PS, then move the jumper, then move it back, and finally plug the power cord back in). Also try removing the CPU & HS/Fan and re-seating both (making sure the fan connector is plugged into the correct header on the mobo).

I finally had a chance to open the case and found that 2 of the capacitors next to the ATX power connector have their top open. I didn't heard any load sound this time. (Last time I had capacitors of BP6 exploded-trace problem with the COMPUSA 300 watt power supply. I had 3 go bad, 2 burned the choke & Power regulator on my EPOX KP6BX dual Slot 1 motherboard)

Do you think that the power supply is the culprit?

I have an ANTEC 300 watts model 303 in this system. I thought I heard that there are some issues with this power supply.

I thought the Antec was at least a step above generics...

I'm wondering if your problem is actually the power coming from your mains (too many spikes) rather than the Power Supply. Especially since you mention that this has happened before. Maybe you could try using a surge suppressor or even a UPS. A big power surge from the mains into your PS would certainly blow things away!

Antecs are more than a step above generics. I think Poof is right, it is time to check out your power. 1 system blowing I can believe is a power supply, but two going starts to make me think you have a problem. A good surge protector will help, but if it is really bad you need some kind of line conditioning.

Agreed with Crazee. Ran into a similar situation at work where monitors kept frying in the call center. They were on (fairly cheap) surge strips, but we still lost almost 20 of them over a 4 month period. We thought it might have been a defective batch of monitors, but instead turned out to be an electrical problem. Funny thing, the electrical company that wired the call center first came out and tested the lines. Of course, they said they were fine. When the problem continued, we called another electrician and had them put a monitor on the line for 3 or 4 days. Turned out the lines were improperly grounded. We're now trying to remove the cost of the replacement monitors out of the original electrician's rectum.

It's on UPS along with the cable modem & Dell Trinitron monitor. The other side of the wall outlet, has another UPS with the TigerMP running without a problem.

I seem to recall someone mention problem with the long term used of ANTEC FF-303 power supply. This particular one was probably on 9-11 months of 24/7 operations. If this is true, I should make preparation to change 2 more FF-303 before I have 2 fried Tiger MP

My previous problem was traced to the Power supply - those particular batch of CompUSA 300 watt power supply can only last 11-13 months of 24/7 operation.(the 3 failures are from different locations) The power supply that blew those capacitors killed a new harddrive, upon reboot that same morning. The other CompUSA 250 watt power supply didn't exibit the same problem.

IsOs - If you think it's the power supply, maybe you can find a better place to get them. I have purchased from Directron most recently. What brand of UPS are you using? (I'm in the market again myself)

I have an old 486 that I bought in May of 1992. Since I upgraded it during the fall of 1999, I have had it running 24/7 since then (not counting ~3 power outages/year that were longer than the UPS would hold). It was originally running SETI and now cracks RC5 blocks. The fan in it will occassionally make some noises, but I haven't had any problems with it and I think it's some generic one 'cause the machine was a generic one. Basically, a power supply should be bullet proof.

I have 14 other machines running 24/7, 3 of which have been doing so since '99, another 6 since '00, and the rest since '01. None have failed due to power supplies.

I hope you can find out what's wrong! Those motherboards are expensive!!!!

I have 2 APC & 5 Tripplite. I prefer APC. One time I tried a Connext UPS. When I first plug in the UPS during installation/delivery, that particular 500 VA model shorted upon plugging powering it on. I haven't tried that brand again, but I see them very well priced.

I have some HPro 250 watts power supplies that been running 24/7 since I started using ATX cases. Except for the need of replacing the fan, they are all running.

I have 2 Enlight PS that hasn't given up on me yet. I also have good experienced with the inexpensive PowerMax 300 Watts PS that I got from Compugeeks. (4) I'll try to look for that post or article that mentioned possible problem with the ANTEC PS.

I like the Tripplites (I have 2), although I haven't been able to find new ones at my usual local stores anymore. I also have 2 "IBM" ones (made by Tripplite), although they don't seem as good as my original Tripps!

Maybe something is posted in the Cases & Cooling Forum about the Antecs. It would be good info to know.

There's a batch of Tripplite either 725 va or 675 va that emits some chemical odor. They worked except that if you're sensitive to the smell, it will irritate you. I returned the 2 I got from 2 different Costco locations here in Hawaii. No fumes problem with the 500 va from Costco

Maybe I should give Connext a second try.

I run Tripplites myself. In my experience I have found them to be every bit as reliable as the APCs without costing as much. I like their software better two since I can monitor other brands of UPS with it.

IsOs - do you mean PP303 power supplies? I have never heard of Antec making an FF-303.
