i want to build a file server for my house so that i could back every thign up on my desktops and laptops, and use it as an ftp server for when im at school. What kind of hardware do i need, and what software?

Hard drives, an el-cheapo old computer like 400MHz or so, NICs, hopefully gigabit, and Linux. I personally use ClarkConnect because I need router features, but if you just want to file server you can install any version. Ubuntu would be a good bet. Then set up Samba for filesharing. Dunno about the ftp yet.

I'd recommend a quality motherboard (DFI/Asus/MSI or whatever your favorite brand is) with built in video/sound/lan and 4 or more SATA ports, a Sempron or Celeron processor and 256MB+ of ram.

Then add a case with a good powersupply (Seasonic/Corsair/Enhance/FSP/Sparkle/whatever), and a 750/500/400gb hdd (whichever is on sale) to start. Then add drives as your needs grow.

I've heard FreeNAS is pretty good for software...

For simple file sharing and FTP, just about any hardware will do. My PIII 550MHz system did just fine.

The hardest part IMO is setting up the software. I use Windows because I'm most familiar with it, and I like to Remote Desktop in to control my newsgroups downloads.
