3 months ago we got a check back from our insurance company for about $300. They said we overpaid our homeowners insurance. We called them up asked them why received this, and told them that we shouldn't be getting it. They swore up and down that it was correct.

Exactly. Are none of you (other than upsciLLion) familiar with the concept of a mutual company?? A mutual company is a company where the profits are shared with the policy holders, prorated based on the amount of business the policy holder does with the company.
