Home automation? X10?

Want to set up home automation using some gear and my iPad. Just not sure what to get. Here is what I want to automate, hoping someone can help me come up with a hardware list.

Looking for a Windows server solution. Not sure what software I will need. End goal:

I want to control the following at a minimum:

Downstairs:
1 ceiling fans\lights
1 garage door
3 exterior lights
1 television
1 av receiver
1 DVR

Upstairs
2 ceiling fans\lights
1 Projector
1 television
1 Av receiver
1 DVR
1 DVD player
Thermostat

Any help from someone who has done such a thing would be greatly appreciated.

This is something ladder logic would be good at. If you can make an iphone work with a PLC, you are gonna be rich....

I've looked at a couple off the shelf solutions. The X10 bits and pieces are relatively cheap ($10-$20 per device). They make standalone server hardware; so I shouldn't have to build anything.

My budget is $750

Just wondering if you followed through and what you got.
