The woman just bought me a new receiver and sub for christmas so now it is time for new speakers. Need suggestions on what to get.

Would like to add some mains, rears, center, and possibly go full 7.1 setup, but don't really want to spend more than $1k-1.5k if possible.

So what should I get?

I want the mains to be floor standing, but want the others to be bookshelf or wall-mountable. Room is approximately 15x15.
 
More music or movies? There are tons of speakers out there, so you really need to audition some locally as a starting point. Axiom and Ascend are also highly rated online-only(I think) dealers.

I'd love to try them out locally, but living in Kansas in a small town makes that difficult. Would probably be a 60/40 balance for movies/music.
 
You want some killer mains and something that does a good job of filling the area for movies.

I'd love to tell you infinity all around ... but to be honest, getting good towers and 5 speakers in addition to that for under $1500 might be tough.

I honestly think you should audition speakers. Find mains you like for about $500 then get surround and center speakers from the same line of speakers.

How big of mains are you looking for? Mine are 3 feet tall and have a 12x11" footprint. With a sub, sou can probably get something with a smaller woofer (maybe 8s or dual 6.5s). Alot of people like Polk Audio for hte prince range your looking into. I had a friend that had a $800 pair of mains that sounded AWESOME.

Oh, what kind of music do you listen to? If it doesn't have much bass in it, you can get mains wihh smaller woofers.

Granted you'll get all kinds of opinions and recommendations, but for $500 those Polks are one heck of a deal. I'm a Klipsch man myself (see sig) but I don't feel like pimping their speakers to you. 😛

I'm not even going to pick on you for what she bought... In this case it's the thought that counts. You've got a great woman there. Never let her go.
 
Do you have any idea what kind of sound you like?

Warm / Bright / whatever?

I've had some very good experiences going with online brands. If you can't easily do a demo in your area, I would recommend picking a couple online brands and then ordering a pair of bookshelf speakers from each company. Keep the ones you like and build a system around that.

The bookshelf speakers could make great rear speakers while you could then order floorstanders up front, a center, and then either dipoles or another pair of regular bookshelf speakers for surrounds.

With a good sub, having floorstanders up front isn't really necessary. A pair of bookshelf speakers can have enough bass extension to match up with a sub. Doesn't look as cool though 😉
