Home Audio people: Which receiver?

Right now I'm using an Onkyo TX-SR501 and will probably be moving that into the computer room to handle the speakers for my computer.

So, the living room needs an upgrade, and I think I've narrowed it down to two models. The Yamaha HTR-5860 or the Denon 2105.

I hear good things about both and both have the auto-setup so they'll adjust to my particular room and will both cost me a little over 350.

The only thing is Denon can go down to a 5.1 (what I have now) and support 2 speakers run into my bedroom whereas the Yamaha doesn't seem to, although I think I can work it with the A and B speakers. That and well, the Denon is refurbished, but I don't mind that much.

What do you guys think?

THX certified doesn't mean jack. a lot of highend audio gear aren't thx certified, and they are leaps better than the budget thx certified gears.

I'd go with the Denon, a better all around receiver. Yamaha makes some nice stuff but frankly it isn't quite as good as the stuff from Denon.

Generally the Yamaha's are more neutral to slightly warm, whereas the Denon units are brighter sounding. Depends what kind of sounds you like really.

i've read the opposite. many people say that the yamaha receivers are brighter and the denon are more neutral/warm. it all depends on what kind of speakers you pair it up with.

Which one will match better with your speakers will depent on what you have.

If you can do it, see if you can demo them both with your speakers somehow to see what sounds better to you.

after having owned both, the yamaha is definitely brighter/harsher, where as the denon is definitely more warm/mellow.
as yoyo says, check out each with your speakers if possible, see what you like the sound of more. although i have found that for ht, the bright vs mellow doesn't seem as big of a deal as with the music. what speakers are you pairing with?

Thanks a lot for the replies guys.

Right now I'm using the Onkyo SKS-HT500 I got along with the onkyo receiver I have but will be moving the 2 fronts I have to the bedroom, and probably be using 2 Polk R50's as the left/rights.

So far it sounds like you guys don't have anything against either receiver, so I guess I'm going to try playing with them some more in store, then just buying them and returning whatever doesn't suit me.

Sorry for the late reply too, had to go start on the new year's dinner. Why spend more then half a hundred when the same can be had for less then 20. That, and no need to dress up.

EDIT: Nice new yorkers and sparkling apple cider. I try not to drink

I've found yamaha's more neutral than denon's. Neither are bright, but denon's are warmer.

I like my Panasonic SA-XR55 all digital 7.1 reciever. It actually replaced a Yamaha and sounds a lot better.
