Home Audio linked to PC

Does anyone know how to or has anyone:

Made their home audio and PC hookup to the same system? Specifically, I want to be able to play things (music, etc.) on my computer in more than one room in my house(livingroom, bedroom, kitchen). I want to be able to select what channels to output to so I can listen in just one room, or all rooms if I have people over and so forth. Basically, I want my PC to be the main hub for output, but don't I have to worry about resistance levels, power, etc?

Has anyone else done this successfully? If so, can you give me the low-down. Thanks 🙂

I don't think a PC-centered system would work for you. Even if it did, a reciever-based setup would be much better.
I use my PC as a source and recorder, but it's definately not the backbone of my AV system.

A multi-room reciever can easily be connected to a sound card with optical in and out (coax is OK too). Video can be handled similarly, if the vid card has VIVO, using s-video or component connections. It will have superior power levels, SNR, and DACs. Basically, everything is better with a good reciever, and many will handle 2 or more sets of speakers, switchable of course. I almost forgot: PC speakers stink out loud. REAL stereo speakers are where it's at. You can even flush mount speakers into walls or cielings, or use weather-resistant ones on a deck or something.
