Home Depot is to Lowes as Walmart is to Target (sort of, Lowes is actually better than that).

In my area Home Depot and Lowe's are right across the street from each other, and equally terrible. I'm sure they draw from the exact same pool of workers which is really all that counts.

Unless I know exactly what I need, and exactly where it's located, I won't go to either one because you'll never get help from the workers. Their job is to stock shelves and answer the phones for whatever 3 departments they're responsible for that day. Ace Hardware and Tractor Supply are worlds better in terms of customer service around here.

No Lowes here, never been to one, but I find Home Depot here is usually ok, but if you have a complicated question they probably wont know. There's Home Hardware too which I always forget about. I should probably try to go there more often and support the local economy, I think they're Canadian.

I prefer Lowe's but we have a HD close so I'll go there first usually. They quite often do not have what I need.

I will say that the HD always has very attractive cashiers. Probably how they stay in business :D

Home Depot is to Lowes as Walmart is to Target (sort of, Lowes is actually better than that).

Yet Lowe's operations costs are like 60% of HDs.

Both stores are practically right next to each other over here so I frequent both. I prefer Lowes but it seems like the lowes near me has a slightly worse selection compared to HD. If I can't find it at lowes I can usually find what I need at HD. That said I agree with Dr. Pizza on the service. I was looking for a non-threaded 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 pvc adapter at HD and the 'plumbing guy' gave me something that very obviously wouldn't work so I just spent a couple of minutes on my own staring at the options until I found the exact part I needed. Spent a stupid amount of time trying to find someone to make a key for me another time

Also either I am being more discerning of quality or the quality is going down on the products at the big box stores. I went through more sanding pads on the deck than the last time I had to sand even though I needed to spend less time sanding, they now carry sikkens deck stain after they fucked up the formulation to make it cheaper, it seems like more of their toilets have an unglazed trap etc
