Ok well here is the deal I used to have road runner and then star power, each used the primary nic's MAC address as a means of identification, there was no special software or anything, they just took your mac addy, put their home page as the default on your browser and entered in their email settings.

Well now I live in arlington VA and I have a new setup, my machine is no longer the host (I have a dedicated gateway, which happens to be a gateway overdriven 200 mmx) and my machine and my girlfriends are the clients, we are using win 98 with ICS.

My problem is that the people at @home decided to use the computer name as a means of authentication through the modem instead of the mac address, loaded this crap software into my machine when I was the host, and did not give me any "valid" meial settings, sure they work if they are hooked up to the primary machine but the clients are screwed when it comes to mail and newsgroups.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a real at home mail and news server other than just "mail" or "news" so that my client machines can also connect? any information would be greatly appreciated thanks

Ok when setting up your connections for the mail you need to put in your full domain of your mail. If you do not know your domain name do a nslook up on your IP address. Mine is mail.wtrlo1.ia.home.com. But I also went one step more and just put in the IP for my mail server so it finds mail mail faster yet. You can get the IP of your mail server by doing a whois search using the name of your mail server.

Now for your news server, type in news1.yourdoaminname.com as your nntp server. @home usually has 2 or 3 servers under each domain. For example here in Iowa it is news1.wtrlo1.ia.home.com

I will post a link for the whois and if you still can't figure it out then email me your IP and I will look them up for you. Good Luck, I hope this helps.

Here is a link for a whois search page. Just use the nslookup search. whois

what is the host name that they gave you (and is on your gateway)...if you replace the first bit of numbers/letters (which is your unique name) with "mail." that usually works...

for instance my host name is "c264688-a.stcla1.sfba.home.com" so my real mail server is "mail.stcla1.sfba.home.com"...From the host I can get at it using just "mail" but if you make a network you need to use the hole thing
