Anyone have experience with home air purifiers?

I'm not talking about little portable units, I mean big units you install by your furnace like the Carrier Infinity system.

I guess they basically are big boxes with electric wires in them that zap dust.

I've heard that they really do a good job eliminating dust, but Id like to hear more if anyone has one.

I am curious about this myself. I know my parents have some sort of electronic filter hooked to the furnace, and it always seemed to be dirty. House always had tons of dust in it though.

Bought a Holmes HEPA floor unit a few years back. It definitely pulled a lot of crud from the air, to the point where I had to replace the filters almost monthly instead of the 6 months it was rated for. Didn't seem to make any impact at the rate of dust accumulation though.

There are two types of central air cleaners. There's HEPA filters, and electronic ones.

The electronic air cleaners are a colossal pain in the ass. You have to take them out and wash everything monthly. They work but they don't do that great a job.

HEPA filters work much better. The filters last a year and you just throw them out after that. The only downside is the filters are expensive.

Realistically, I'd probably stick with the regular furnace filters and just use portable units, unless your family has allergies.
