Holycrap my Venice is hot!!

So this is my brand new Venice rig:

DFI nForce4 Ultra-D
Venice 3000+ LBBLE 0517 APAW
2x512MB TwinMOS CH-5

Right now I'm at isolating the CPU phase. I have tested my HTT and it crapped out around 300 at default voltage. So right now the CPU is running on 1.5 vcore, 280x9 (~2520MHz), and it's at freaking 70C!!! I know it's probably the MB sensor reporting high.. but it's good to make sure so I don't freak out later

Why the hell is it so damn hot? I know that my XP-90 + 92mm Panaflo L is properly seated because it feels hot to the touch. BTW the chipset temp is 48C.. which is barely hotter when idle.. where do I check ambient case temp?

The other funny thing is.. it jumps from about 47C idle to 60+C in merely seconds right after I turn on prime95 small FFT torture test.. and when I stop the test, it returns to idle temp just about as fast 😕 So far it's been running prime95 for about 1/2 hour.. and I think I still can push it a bit more.

I think I have one hell of a chip here.. but it's just too dang hot :/

Update: Lowered vcore to 1.45v and increased HTT to 290 (I know, I know), still going strong on prime95 😀 It's now going 65C max.

47*C idle? My san diego with xp-120 and the 120mm version of your fan gets 47*C LOAD at 1.7vcore 2.8ghz. And the heatsink is cool to the touch. What's your room temp? I run 80-95*F typically. Judging from your chipset temp it looks like your case temp is probably in the 36-38*C area. Try getting better case cooling.

Either your board bios is reporting the wrong temp, or your heatsink isn't making good contact. I had a bit of a problem figuring out the best way to install a k8 heatsink, so be sure both clips are engaged before locking it down.

Have you checked your voltage with smartguardian? maybe your bios is overvolting. Also, could it be your case's airflow?

if your cpu is at 70 and the heatsink is making good contact, you shouldn't be able to touch the heatsink, maybe find a thermometer and see what temp the heatsink is, its going to be lower than it actually is but it will give you a ballpark

Voltages are fine.. it's in fact undervolting.. I figured that the sensors are reporting high so it's not a big issue there. Airflow isn't the greatest.. but should be pretty sufficient. There's a 120mm Panaflo back exhaust at 7v, 92mm Panaflo front intake full 12v (which doesn't affect temps that much). It's currently priming at 2.56GHz@1.45v (1.4v reported in SmartGuardian), 65C. It's rock stable so I'm not really worried now

That's good to know! I really don't think this Venice can get any hotter than my toaster of an Athlon XP JIUHB 0310 WPMW 🙂

Your way too hot for some reason, figure it out or your going to smell burnt plastic someday soon. A64 should'nt be that hot even overclocked; my newcastle 3400 only hits 43c at load doing 2.6Ghz.

I would agree that if it was actually running that hot, it's trouble.

However, there is such a thing as bad sensors, & if the HSF is correctly seated (sounds like it is), you are likely fine.

I'd leave the case open to see if that affects temps much.

Touch The heatsink If it is really really warm (or Hot) then your fine but if that is warm or cool to the touch then your heatsink needs to be reapplied. At that temp it should almost burn you to touch it but I seroiusly doubt it will be that hot. It still need to be hot though to prove that it is working at all.
