Holy Smokes!!

So here I was surfin ATOT - all of a sudden I start to smell this really bad burnt electronic smell... all of a sudden I see smoke start to billow out the front of my computer case - out the side fan and out the back of the power supply... Quickly reached back and hit the power supply switch to kill it and unplugged everything in what seemed like one yank.

Grabbed the system and ran it out into my living room where it seemed to stop smoking... I set it down, checked the sides to make sure it wasnt warm (fire) and took the side of the case off...

Turns out one of the wires for my front LCD must have been pinched between my hard drive bracket and it arced causing the wire to go up in smoke... I sure was lucky (I'm using the computer again right now as I type this) fire was beside the one hard drive with all my backups on it...

My quick reaction really saved this machine - the wire was burnt about 3/4 the way up to the power supply where it would have surely done some major damage...

Pictures (56k beware)

i had the same situation. my sony 17" trinitron was fried. smoke came out, i was like holy sh!t because i was living in dorms. i unplugged everything then grabbed a can of gysol and sprayed like mad to avoid the fire alarm. after that, i tried to power that monitor again and it wouldnt turn on. so i ended up buying a 17" lcd.

r.i.p. sony 17" trinitron 2001-2004.

sh1t man, good thing you were there when it happened! that sucks though - glad to hear it wasn't super damaged.

you never know what else could catch on fire though - scary business indeed!

what caused the fire?

if you read the thread you would know.

And if you read, you would know the PSU still worked

Get off the man's back.

he only said that he was using the computer again. he never said whether he replaced the PSU or not. 😛
