Holy Smoke

Bleep

Diamond Member
Well not holy but smoke. I was just setting here looking over the threads and the power supply on my best cracker blew up. Really blew up. A good bang and some really smelley smoke. Good thing for spare parts. I guess 2 years at 24-7 was just to much for the old girl.

I guess it was good you were around and it didn't cause more damage.

Sorry to hear about the failed PS. The only good thing about things like that is they are a convenient time to do upgrades. 😉

The magic smoke escaped, 2 years seems a little short for a power supply.

I thought this thread was about Smoke & company leaping to #1 in the TeAm standings 😉

I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. It was on one of my other machines sitting next to my desk. WTF was that ... then the smoke then a second pop then the smell. I requisitioned a PS from the PC parts bin and had it back up in 30 mins. I was a little worried when I turned it on again if there would be any other damage. No other problems😀

I seem to chew fans and power supplies running DC projects....surprizingly, it doesn't seem to kill hard drives.

My mate Gavin had a PSU die on him the other week ,but at 4.5yrs old ,& running 24/7 for 3.5yrs we weren't complaining😉

Talking of dieing fans ,anyone know where I can get cheap graphic chips fans from (preferabley in the UK) ,I've got 2 dieing ,1 on a GTS2 & another on Gavins TNT2.No he doesn't want to upgrade!😛

The fan stopped on my main rig recently but I caught it before blow up. I smelled that not very good electronics burning smell and noticed it was quiet so I knew the fan had stopped. I shut it down opened up the PS, took out the fan, opened up the bearing seal in the middle of the fan and put some more oil in it. Re-sealed it, put it back together and off and running. Probably about the 5th time I have done this. The case and Power supply is at least 6 years old now and has been going 24/7.

Risky!:Q ,thats what I've done for the 2 graphic cards but I want a long term solution

I haven't bought one yet but the Fans I get from now on will be the new bearingless Fans. They work on the same principle as the Mag lev trains. The Fan blade is literally floating in a magnetic field. Should last just about forever.
