I love this quote:

"What is great about Sharon is that even today...he can still spin everybody like a top," political commentator Chemi Shalev wrote in the newspaper Maariv. "No one...knows for sure whether Sharon has indeed turned into a born-again peacemaker or if he remains the old wolf in sheep's clothing."

I think this part sums it up pretty well:

Refusing to Be a 'Refusenik'

But few in Israel were taking his newfound word literally.

"Deep inside, he doesn't really believe that anything can be done with [Palestinian leader Yasser] Arafat still around," said a veteran Sharon observer who speaks often with the prime minister.

"So he says: 'Why should I be the one to screw the Americans over and be the refusenik in peace moves?.' Down deep, he doesn't believe settlements will have to be evacuated, because the Palestinians will torpedo the deal."

Probably threatened to pull US backing if he keeps on with his illegal settlements

Bush was evaluated buy Sharon, and Sharon adapted. If you recall, Clinton very nearly had Camp David working. Remember what happened? Exactly what each side wanted. Nothing. Neither side had to give up power or territory because it was never intended by either side to work, and it looked good. Be prepared for a repeat.

That is fine. Israel can survive. It does have nukes and would use them if needed. That would be the end of the palestinian conflict.

New Rome has a great deal of influence, but the low life in other countries can be stubborn. The old Rome found maintaining influence problematic at times.

Just a few seconds search on google would help you not look so foolish next time.

It continuously amazes me how some people spend time debating issues but don't take the time to learn about what they are debating.

It amazes me how people entire lives seem to rotate around an internet forum. *cough* etech *cough*:p

Oh, and etech, oh superior internet forum guru that you are, what issue or issues was I debating per se? I was only pointing out what I thought was an error. It seems like as much as I should have used Google, you should have paid attention to my post before telling me I was debating anything...

:p

Edit: One more thing, for me at least, there is no debate on this matter. People in Israel hate the people in Palestine, and vise versa. They will continue hating and killing each other as they have done for countless years before. Until the people themselves decide to change and really try for peace, things like roadmaps and peace plans are doomed to failure IMO. This is my last comment on this topic since, being so foolish and ignorant on this issue, unlike others who know everything, I am obviouly not fit to be in this debate at all. :)

I'm sorry, I thought I heard something? Was that you etech? Isn't there a joke you won't get being told somewhere?

Oh, in case you missed it...you said this...

You still haven't answered the question...what was I debating that I didn't take the time to learn about? Are you going to answer, or are you the only one that can post the questions around here?

Me too. Now I just hope both him and the new PL PM get beyond words and actually do something.

From the latest reports it seems Arafat still wants to throw a wrench in the works.

Arafat Puts Mideast Summit Into Question

I'm pretty sure that is what Sharon is counting on. Talk big, but don't really have to do anything because you are sure the other side will cheese the deal before it even gets going.

tnitsuj -

I forgot to apologize for my pointing out what I thought was an error in your post in jest, but it turned out I was the one that was wrong. I'm sorry. :)

Yes, but isn't it ironic that Sharon can count on the Palestinians for support where otherwise he would receive none. But who knows, maybe these fools can get into a game of brinksmanship and bluff each other right into a peace deal. Doubtful at best, but I have more hope in something like that happening than the realization of peace through honest negotiations by the current leadership of either party.
