Holy shnikes! Cop just gave me a breathalyzer test!

Damn that was probably the scariest moment of my life. All I did was go straight in a left-turn only lane (I knew what I was doing...realized at the last moment that it was a better way home and turned blinkers off) and as soon as I'm through the light i see the flashing red & blues in the rearview mirror. I pull over, cop comes over and tells me my mistake, asks me what I'm doing in Rochester (I have NC plates) and when I tell him I was at a bar with friends he asks me to step outside.

First test was walking the line, which I did fine. Second test was counting down from 67 to 54, which I did fine. Third test was alphabet from E thru W. I'm scared sh*tless at this point and accidentally say "E,D" but I quickly correct myself and say the rest fine. Cop wasn't convinced, however, and finally made me take the breathalyzer test (keep blowing 'till I say stop.) Well thank heavens I'd had a gyro and fries and a tall water five minutes before, because I think that helped me pass!!

Don't get me wrong--I've been in situations where I was too drunk to drive and I knew to take a cab or call a friend for a ride. I'm fine with leaving my car wherever and picking it up the next morning if I'm not safe. I knew I was safe tonight--but I just didn't notice the left-turn only sign because I'm still not familiar with that part of the city, and the part of the sign on the road was covered up with snow/slush crap (I missed the sign overhead.) It was an honest mistake I probably could've made in broad daylight stone sober.

Still, this scared the bejeezus outta me and I don't think I'm ever driving to/from a bar or club again!

Oh yeah...I didn't ask him what I blew nor did he tell me...but a BAC calculator website leads me to believe it was around 0.06.

An honest mistake can turn into a deadly one just as easy.

I'm happy for you, but please let this be a lesson and don't drive again when you've had 5-6 beers earlier the same night. You may have been legal but you were impaired to some degree, it just isn't worth the potential risk to yourself or others.

Regardless of what he blew, he was legal. The state of New York thinks he was safe to drive, you people can't come down on him too hard for doing something entirely legal.

lol, I was gonna mention mythbusters too...but "congrats" on not getting caught I guess, but I don't blame the soon-to-be-present nazis for berating you...5-6 beers (depends on the time frame I guess) is a decent amount. I'm just speaking from personal history, hopefully the experience will be remembered next time you think about hopping in the car without letting yourself sober up.

I dunno man, I'm being harder on myself right now. I decided to leave before anyone else because I have a team meeting and a meeting with the Dean tomorrow, plus I had a bunch of errands to run before the snow storm hits. Had I stayed longer, I could've had another drink, and that might have put me over the limit. Plus tonight I was drinking bud lights because they were on special...but usually I'm drinking vodka tonics. Hell I had 5-6 vodka tonics last night when the Graduate Women in Business hosted open bar 80's night...and I drove home in blowing snow on uncleared roads! I take way too many chances, and now I've had my first wake up call. Good thing my wakeup call didn't involve jail, a wreck, or worse.

Wow, you got off lucky. I had to say the alphabet backwards and walk a straightline toe to heel backwards...yes they were real pricks.

Never give him probable cause. Let him ask if you have been drinking, never volunteer it.

Just never say that to a cop. That's a free ride to the station.

if it was 5-6 beers in the course of 6-7 hours you probably should have been safe for the legal bac level(depending on what state you're in) it takes ~ 1hr for your body to remove the alcohol of 1 12oz. beer or 1 shot of liquor.

Neither could I, having a beer or two for some reason helps loosen up my mind though

Yeah, because we can't smell it the second we get to the window.

What matters here is when you had your first beer, how spaced out the timing of each beer was, and when you had your last beer and when you were pulled over. Basically, a time-line of events would be nice.

Combine that with how much you weigh.

Time, and only time can keep you from blowing over the limit.

It sounds to me like you paced yourself well and were not drunk at all (though I believe that .08 is a ridiculously low standard).
