I just couldn't stand playing HL2 at low res anylonger, so I picked up a x800XL from ATi with a coupon code of 1010 from another thread. 2 days later, and I jumped from 39fps to 128fps using CS:S video stress test as a reference. Now all I have to do is sell my 9600XT.

I'm glad I made the jump...I'm sure something better or cheaper will be coming out just around the corner, but I want to play now....

I know this sounds sappy, but I'm a newb when it comes to gaming...did you know there were reflections on the floor and shadows in HL2? Frickin sweeeeet...

Yes, I did know that. 😛 (6800GT owner) - In theory your 9600XT could do those as well (since it's also a DX9 card), but it's almost certainly too slow to do so, as you're aware. 😉

Thanks...and that was the whole purpose of the upgrade...I just couldn't stand to look at the games without all the bells and whistles...I just played a little FarCry...did you know there was grass on the island?

I always wondered why they couldn't see me...now I know!!! That (FarCry) is a really sweet looking game...nice and bright. Now I just have to learn the tricks like jump-running (or whatever it's called) and straff-jumping...I'm such a newb.......

it was kinda like me going from a r8500 to a 9800xt - last Spring . . . . "shadows" and "lighting" took on a whole new meaning.

FC is a pretty hard game. Make SURE you have patch v1.31 or it crashes. Also, you can "hack" it [easily - do a "search" in Software/Games] to 'save anytime'.

Must be almost mind-blowing. I went from a 9800pro (OC'd a little past XT speeds) to a 6800GT. Ahhh.. the Goodness. But the leap from a 9600 class card must seem doubley so. Enjoy!

I just picked up the same card last Friday Tweakin, I love it as well. I don't even have to overclock this card it rules so much. 😛
 
Wow I can only imagine. I saw a world of dffierence going from a 9800np to a 6800GT. Nothing like playing every game at 1600x1200 with Max details 🙂.

After the install I wanted to play every game over again with it too. Even Max Payne 2 which my 9800 pro played it fine anyway.
 
I know the feeling Tweakin, I upgraded from a R8500 to an X800XT, that's an even bigger jump. Enjoy the fps and eye-candy dude.
 
went from a 9800 pro to a 6800oc last year then a 6800nu to a 6800gt, i'm loving it.

bought it from megatomic, stable at 380/1120 mega;-P
 
Geforce2 Ultra -> X800XT PE. I can now use 6x/16x aaaf on CS Woot! Maybe i should get some newer games... Well, i have halflife2, but that is not to my taste..
 
Thanks to all who have answered my questions in the past few months...this wasn't an easy decision, especially with all the Nvidia does this or ATi does that...you know what I'm talking about. Anyway, gotta get back to Raven Home...some serious details in that world....

Ummm... Maybe I'll put my old gf2mx in place of my oc'd 9800p, I forgot how much of an improvement it was. 😛
 
I wish you didnt get a x800xl...a 6800gt would have been a more future proof solution.

But yeah, either way it is amazing to see that boost, so congrats 🙂

That's exactly how I felt when I first got my 9800Pro. I had a Geforce 4mx (DX 7) before, and man! The transition was unbelievable! HL2 wasn't out yet, but FarCry looked amazing. I was playing it on the GF4 and it looked like crap. Then when I first saw bumpy water I was literally shocked! First shader I've ever seen! Graphics were jaw dropping. Advanced normal and bump maps, and reflective materials, etc, etc... So I feel for you 🙂

HL2 is really an awesome game, you should give it a chance. 🙂 If you're mainly a FPS person like I am, you might also look into FarCry...great game as well, and very nice graphics too.
 
Just finished playing a round of FarCry...did you know there are fish in them ther waters.....This is just so fricking cool....I really had no idea. My son is a gamer, but he is also running a 9600XT on a 2800+, which is a good mix; but not like what I have.

As for hans030390, don't feel sorry for me...I have a killer card and that's all the matters. At this level I don't see why there are so many who constantly bicker about which is best...it's all good......

As for the price, I used the coupon code from a thread in the Hot Deals (1010) and they took off 10%. Came to $329 and was on my door in two days. Needless to say, I'm a happy camper.

By the way, whats wrong with my sig?

I remember when I first downloaded the FarCry demo last January....it was really the first thing that showed off the 9700 Pro I had at the time. I remember thinking "OMG....the water....it looks like real water!!!!:Q"

I do find myself "playing around" in the levels right now just to see what things look like. I'm gettin my butt capped from all over the place...cooool
