So this guy here at my camp (in Afghanistan) has been going on and on about this "Sager" laptop he ordered a month ago. I'd never heard of the brand before he mentioned it, but then I saw an article saying they would be one of the first to ship a laptop with the new gtx480m in it. This guy is the computer\network\communications guy for his unit.
So it got here today, and I had to check it out. He paid $3,200 for it. It's a 17.3" with an i7 920, 12GB of memory, 3x 500gb 7200 hard drives, a gtx285m, cable tuner, bluetooth, etc. When he said it was a 17.3", I figured it would be roughly the same size as my Asus G72. Boy was I wrong. When it's closed, this thing is more than 3" thick, the base is THAT thick. I picked it up, it weighs about 12lbs. The keyboard is very generic, not backlit, doesn't have lighted keys or anything.
He showed me the 4 fans on the bottom of it and said, "Can you believe how quiet it is?" I replied that "yeah, it's not doing anything." He said, "It's been on all day! Earlier I was installing office AND listening to music and it didn't get any louder even when I was pushing it." I blinked and stared at him.
I'm not normally the kind of guy that gets jealous about other people's nicer stuff ("My Corolla does the same thing as your BMW" type arguments.) But that thing just seems like a pig. It weighs sooo much. And it cost so much money, and it doesn't even have backlit keys? It's a gaming laptop! If you're going to spend a bunch of money, every recent Alienware I've seen has been far more impressive than this Sager. I feel like for the $999 I paid for my Asus G72 a couple months ago, it'll do everything that his Sager will do, and if it gets all screwed up (we're in Afghanistan after all) I won't have any qualms about tossing it in a dumpster on my way to the plane home.
So, defenders of Sager laptops or other such ridiculous machines, come forward!
