Holy Sager laptop!

Nebor

Lifer
So this guy here at my camp (in Afghanistan) has been going on and on about this "Sager" laptop he ordered a month ago. I'd never heard of the brand before he mentioned it, but then I saw an article saying they would be one of the first to ship a laptop with the new gtx480m in it. This guy is the computer\network\communications guy for his unit.

So it got here today, and I had to check it out. He paid $3,200 for it. It's a 17.3" with an i7 920, 12GB of memory, 3x 500gb 7200 hard drives, a gtx285m, cable tuner, bluetooth, etc. When he said it was a 17.3", I figured it would be roughly the same size as my Asus G72. Boy was I wrong. When it's closed, this thing is more than 3" thick, the base is THAT thick. I picked it up, it weighs about 12lbs. The keyboard is very generic, not backlit, doesn't have lighted keys or anything.

He showed me the 4 fans on the bottom of it and said, "Can you believe how quiet it is?" I replied that "yeah, it's not doing anything." He said, "It's been on all day! Earlier I was installing office AND listening to music and it didn't get any louder even when I was pushing it." I blinked and stared at him.

I'm not normally the kind of guy that gets jealous about other people's nicer stuff ("My Corolla does the same thing as your BMW" type arguments.) But that thing just seems like a pig. It weighs sooo much. And it cost so much money, and it doesn't even have backlit keys? It's a gaming laptop! If you're going to spend a bunch of money, every recent Alienware I've seen has been far more impressive than this Sager. I feel like for the $999 I paid for my Asus G72 a couple months ago, it'll do everything that his Sager will do, and if it gets all screwed up (we're in Afghanistan after all) I won't have any qualms about tossing it in a dumpster on my way to the plane home.

So, defenders of Sager laptops or other such ridiculous machines, come forward!

yeah, I have seen those. They are beasts. I owned a Gateway 600 series laptop....it was huge and heavy. No way I can get anything heavier than that. It just is not practical.

Wrong forum.

I'm very happy with my Best Buy G71 that I bought back when it first came out. I dual boot windows and linux. I can game on the Windows side and when I'm trying to do work stuff I can have 3 or 4 virtual machines running on the Linux side without any problems, it's awesome. I added a 2nd hard drive too.

To put it in cars:
Sager is the M3 (Has everything it needs to be #1, nothing it doesn't...at least that's the concept 😀 )
Alienware is the 318ti (Just has the bare minimums it needs to get the BMW badge)
and a Corolla is a corolla

P.S: This is OT, if your post was in "SFF/Notebooks etc." my reply would be different 😛

Well this isn't a technical laptop discussion. It's more a fun, "you call that a laptop" discussion. Feel free to also compare the HTC HD2 to a tablet PC, if that would generalize the thread for you. 😉

I think the Sager is more like the Alpina Z8. They added too much crap, it got too heavy, and it ended up worse than it started. 😉

A buddy of mine has what's probably last year's version of that - smae screen size but older specs. It's a beast - he had a hard time finding a backpack that would hold it.

And the power brick... well, it's about the size of an actual brick 😀

I think the Sager is more like ATOT. There's some good stuff there, but it's so overburdened with crap that it's almost not worth it.

I said almost. ()🙂

Your friend enjoys computers and if that's what keeps him sane then I see no issue with it. I got a asus from fry's with a gtx 260m for $900 and it works just fine.

portable desktop is more like it, haha.

I've preferred ASUS for gaming laptops over the years ... they are built so ruggedly, and are very competitively priced. They are also sized like a laptop, and not bulky.

It's actually kind of outdated already considering it's 1x puny GTX 285M, lack of an SSD.

I asked him why he didn't get an SSD instead of 3x7200rpm 500gb HDs, he asked what an SSD was. I can't imagine 3x7200rpm HDs is good for battery life.

Also I was surprised he didn't get SLI 285m's. And according to Sager they'll be shipping 480m laptops in a few weeks.

Sager/Clevo laptops are incredible if you have the money. While I've never seen them in person, I've spent plenty of time drooling over reviews of them 🙂

A client of mine has one of those Dell half desk half laptops. It had a 20" screen and a big ass handle on it. It definitely was the biggest/heaviest laptop I've seen. Not cutting edge hardware or feature wise. But it was fucking huuuuuuge. I don't know the exact weight, but I picked it up and it was heavy as shit. I should Google it, maybe it wasn't technically even a laptop, had never seen anything like it before. *Googling it*

http://www.gizmag.com/go/5687/ Says it weighs 18.3 pounds HOLY SHIT.

They are plastic boxes. With inferior screens. And desktop components crammed in a box.

I owned that system for a while. It's an XPS2010. It had a gorgeous screen and sound system.

$3200...for that???

My laptop I only paid $1200 for and it basically crushes that Sager in every sense of the word. I have a faster CPU (Q9000 @ 2.7ghz), DUAL ATi 4870's, a 18.4in 1080p screen, 6GB RAM, weighs less than his, it runs cooler than his, built in 6 speaker 5.1 (even has a 1.5 inch subwoofer 😛...hey is sounds damn good!)...etc, etc, etc...

This guy either has too much money or is an idiot.

Especially for the price he couldn't even get SLI??? A SINGLE GTX285m?!?! NEXT!!!....

For gaming.

Are you talking about wow or dota or something? I still don't see why you'd need backlit keys? What game requires you to look at your key before you hit it? Wow and dota are two that come to mind only because they have stuff with recharge? times.

Inferior to what...desktop monitors? If so, then this is a thread about a laptop, not a desktop. If they're inferior to other laptop screens, then I guess the professional reviewers all lie.
