Holy %#@$ pothole, batman!

SSSnail

Lifer
So there I was, just driving a long on an unfamiliar road with a slight mist and all of a sudden BAM!!! I felt a jolt like something huge just popped up on my rims with no tires. It wasn't a good feeling after that pop and I thought everything was alright.

When I got home, a quick inspection to the front right tire fooled me into thinking everything was alright. So this morning, as I got in the car and drove away, something wasn't right as I felt bumps like you wouldn't believe. And somehow I missed my low pressure warning light. Got out of the car and this is what I found on the right rear tire.

This will set me back a bit.

Ouch! <-- Look closely, there's a crack along the joint.
More ouch!
I think I killed that pothole.

:Q How did you miss that damage in the AM SSSnail? 😕

Forget the low tire pressure light... how do you not notice a flat tire and a dented wheel? 😕

It was on the passenger side. Initially I only looked at the front wheel and didn't take a very good look at the rear wheel... big mistake.

If you look closely at the first pic, it's cracked along the inner joint.

Low profile tires. Easy to mistake them for being full when they are low.

Hell, I once blew one of my low profile tires completely and drove home easily on the tire alone. It didn't even take that much more damage, and there was no damage to the rim.

Thats what you get for putting BMW rims on your Kia, jk, jk, yeah that is sucky, either way you go repair or replace will be costly. Insurance claim maybe?

Take pics of the pothole and the damaged wheel, and send those along with a receipt of the replacement wheel to the city for reimbursement. You might luck out and get at least some money out of them (or in your state's case, an IOU) 😉

Srsly? The city will pay for it? I seriously doubt that prospect because if they cared the pothole wouldn't be there in the first place.

I'm contemplating insurance claim, but, it seems not worth it because the deductible is already $500, although that would get me the tire.

It's pothole season here with the snow melting, and the same places have potholes every year. It's kind of fun watching unsuspecting people driving towards them start swerving and trying to cut across traffic to avoid the big ones. I saw a minivan hit one yesterday that had to be 2 feet across and a few inches deep. Like someone dug a hole in the road.

Serves you right for running rubber bands.

and buying ricer wheels.

Srsly? The tires and wheels were standard on a 330Ci sports package.

Yes they are. The consequences of that (rubber bands and big pot holes) are bent wheels no matter what the car.

I know it sucks, but that's how it is. You might be able to get BMW to replace the wheel under warranty.

Hah, didn't think of that. I automatically assume that no warranties would cover accidental damages such as this. I will give them a call tomorrow.

God I hate potholes. My car is tiny and doesn't really ride all that smooth on flat, level ground, so when I hit a pothole I feel like my car gets bent in half. Hit one tonight that I think knocked my car BACK into alignment (was previously pulling to the right).

That or your city are your only recourse.

I have never dented a wheel, and I hit potholes all the time. Hell, the rads around here are more pothole than road. Steel wheels + sidewall = win.
