So I'm pricing out a non-stop flight.
Frontier/Spirit was cheapest. given their reputation, I'm skipping them.

United was 2nd lowest and costs $100 more but their basic economy seating has WTF restrictions?!
Not Available Cancellation
Not Available Seat Choice
Not Available Changes
Not Available Priority Boarding
Not Available Carry On Bag*

so I cant select the seat anymore?
and I'm only allowed an under the seat bag. I cant bring a full sized luggage to put in the overhead bins.

to get seat choice and full size carry on bag, it costs $50 more. :(
so United is following Frontier/Spirit airlines nickel and diming price gauging policy?

If lowest price is your highest priority basic economy competes for your business. If you want more options they have regular economy at a higher price. They're just giving customers what they ask for.

Hate to admit it, but I agree. I suppose you could look at it as nickel and diming, but just as easily look at it as a way of offering customers a cheaper fair.

United is actually a bit late to the Basic Economy game as Delta and AA have been offering something similar for longer. I think the United restrictions are a bit tougher although I'm not entirely certain as I avoid those at all costs due to a fear of middle seats (and therefore will always pay more to book a seat)

I booked a flight to Grand Cayman on United a few weeks ago and I could select my seat and bring carry on stuff no problem.

I want to use the airline that Indiana Jones used with the livestock on it. Ford Tri-motor with the "Lao Che Air Freight" airline.

Basic economy is trash unless you have the airline credit card that can give you all the perks of a normal ticket.

I'd just go for the budget airlines.

Frontier is OK for short haul flights, anything longer than ~2 hrs though, forget it. The seats are super uncomfortable and that tray table is a joke, can barely fit your drink cup.

Yup. I've been flying United a lot lately simply because they offer (far) cheaper fares. Then again, I pack light...a single backpack with a few Army-rolled changes of clothes, Chromebook & charger, iPhone charger, 20k-mAh USB battery, ziploc bag for snacks, and empty water bottle to refill in the airport. I buy toiletries at Walmart or wherever when I land & just eat the cost (better than having oozing shampoo or toothpaste in your flight bag or having to toss the larger bottles at security), and do laundry at the hotel or local laundromat if I'm staying more than a few days. My last flight was like $300 cheaper than everywhere else because I did United with just a single small carry-on. Easy on, easy off.
