And it all happened after I showered and stretched. Now my entire upper-back is itchily sparking. Severely. I'm assuming the shower dried out the skin and the stretching released whatever toxins/waste that the burn had been accumulating. I think I'll just literally not take any showers for a few days, pile on the deodorant, avoid all exercise, and see if things get better. :p

Edit: And of course this would happen right when I need to go to sleep.

Draw a room-temperature bath. Pour in a 1.5 cups of white vinegar. Sit in the bath for 20-45 minutes depending on the severity of the burn. No, you will not smell like vinegar. It should take out a bit of the redness and quite a bit of the sting. :)

Also you want to look for a product that is pure Aloe Vera Gel. "Aloe Vera Juice" is not what you want. I've heard "Fruit of the Earth" brand is good. There are several others, but basically you're looking for pure, uncut aloe, not lotion with a little aloe added.

And yes you have to apply a ton of it, very frequently. You need a larger quantity than you'd use for sunscreen.

I'm in a dorm. All I have is a shower. Otherwise I would have just drawn a bath of warm water and sat there.

Use sunscreen next time you go outside for extended periods? http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q...&aqi=g5&fp=OzgK0dwM7rU

I did. This was the result of a beach trip and some purportedly waterproof sunscreen that turned out to be not so waterproof. I even reapplied the stuff once an hour. My entire upper back, shoulders, and head, including scalp, is a fricken lobster. There are a few healthy streakds of untouched skin though, apparently 10% of that bullshit sunscreen was actually waterproof.

Actually, I may have found a solution. I have a lorezepam prescription to help me sleep, but it's effectively a low grade tranquilizer. I just felt it kick in (got tired) and while it didn't silence the itching, it suppressed it by about 70%

That sucks. I am always skeptical of "waterproof" sunscreen.

I was in the water a lot so I doubt any waterproof sunscreen would really have helped me. (If I ever needed sunscreen) (Surfing and swimming... Fun)

I think emu oil would help.. I doubt it's easily accessible though.

Whenever I get a sunburn I always throw the aloe on, wait about 10 minutes, then slather on some Aveeno. If you can get the Aveeno cream with the aloe in it, then I would get that. The Aveeno will help also when you start to peel. You won't have as much skin to peel off.

Aloe itself is useless as a sunscreen, it is included in sunscreen lotion in small amounts for the most part because people like seeing it on the bottle..

It should be labeled "water resistant", I work in this industry and since the FDA is (right now) very loose as to what manufactures can claim anything goes. The best sunscreens (IMO) are based on titanium dioxide or zinc oxide as these are sun reflectors, not absorbers and are difficult to remove by water only. Yea there is a chalky-whiteness on the skin while using but you KNOW your protected if you can see it on the skin..

it is supposed to relieve the burn....not the itch....(and as you said, it doesnt prevent burns whatsoever)

when i got 3rd and 2nd degree burns up my arm, i harvested the neigbhours aleo vera plants. Using the juice direct from the plant is the best method of relief i found, that and sleeping pills

Yep, I keep an aloe plant in my yard for that reason, the thing is hardy as hell too. Not an option for a lot of folks though as it won't do well in cold climes..

Well, then it just shows a decided lack of confidence in themselves to include in the sunscreen.

People, this is 2009. Go to the damn drug store and get some sunburn spray and stop using treatments that are 100 years old.
