My old router = Gigafast WF-717B ($6)
My new router = Linksys WRT54G V4 (with OpenWRT in the works as soon as it's officially V4 compatible)
My old bandwidth cap = 500kB
My new observed bandwidth cap = 1000kB. One megaBYTE per second. 8mbit.
It is worth noting that the Gigafast also stopped passing most UDP traffic towards the end of it's service life. That's why it was replaced. So, either my B/W cap got upped when I rebooted the modem while installing the new router, or that $6 POS was a bottleneck from hell.
