Why do ppl keep saying the guy is rich? That doesn't have to be true at all.

5 years ago it was normal to spend $5 grand on a computer. 3 years ago that fell to 3.5 grand. Now ppl try to build a gaming rig for $1500. It's just that consumers became smarter and don't see a reason to spend that much money on a system (and that spending 3-4x less still gets you 80% of the performance) that'll become obsolete in 6 months. But if people continued to spend and think of technology as they did 5 years ago, everyone now would still spend $5 grand and have SLI.

I remember my friends buying computers for 4-5 grand. My P2 233mhz cost $2200 or so. Forget the fact that computers are faster and so on. But my last computer I built for $800. The general perception of consumers on how much they spend on computers has changed. Now most ppl buy laptops for $1600-2500. 5 years, ago it wasnt uncommon to see ppl spend $4-5 grand either.

Is that why the highest end video cards were no more than $200 but now they're $600?

Yep, my first 80386 was $5,000 and I had to finance it over a year. Adjusted for inflation that is $8,200. Today you spend $2k and people act like you are Donald Trump.

klah:

True true. Desptite good performance gains, it's still a bragging right more than anything else. 2 Ultras is much too rich for my blood, but who wouldn't want 2 Ultras?...

So allow me to reiterate:

Damn rich people.

Rollo...

In the tech report benchmarks the XT-PE is not far behind the 6800U SLI, its about 10-15% more, but compared to the 6800U single card its about 40 to 50% more in most benchies.

I think what Todd (i think thats the guys name on here) is trying to say is why shell out over $400 for a 10-15% increase in performance compared to its rival card the X800XT-PE?

And also one more thing, in the techreport review, in both its benchmarks for Doom 3, in High Quality with 4x AA on at 1600x1200 resoluition the XT-PE was only about an average of 5 FPS behind the 6800U single card. I always thought the XT-PE lagged behind in Doom 3, but from that review its not anymore, wierd?!?!?!

no big deal ppl. You have money, you build this. So what ? I dont respect this guy, sorry. I respect stuff like this.

Who do you respect more? A Ferrari F50 owner or a 1000hps Skyline GT34 one ?

My 2 cents, feel free to flame 🙂

Dravyn-
I have a X800 XT PE now, and while it is teh roxor, it is no Ultra SLI.

Their benches match mine that I ran last night. I found the XT PE as fast as my (sold) 6800GT, which is not much slower than a 6800Ultra.

I can't wait when I start my new job. Mu ha. First thing im getting is a NF4 with an FX55. Will I go SLI? No. You frign insane? I can't believe the people actually taking SLI seriously. In rollo's case, adding another vanilla 6800 would actually be kind of sweet. But that's 500 dollars plus mobo and PSU for what? You would of been better of just getting the 6800GT.

Note - Rollo, last time I heard you had a 6800.
