Villaraigosa Calls For Cuts For All City Services
LOS ANGELES (CBS) ―

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Tuesday called on the city to shut down all general-funded city services -- such as courthouses and libraries -- for two days a week.

The cost-cutting measure, which would begin on April 12, will not impact public safety services, such as police and fire departments.

Details were still unfolding.

yay brokeness. I'd imagine going to traffic court after 4/12 would = 7th layer of hell

Imagine if the economy had crashed instead of the Feds bailing out the banks?
It would have been disaster. I mean a disaster of biblical proportions.

The only hope is that the Obama adminstrations actions will not only rescue us from the brink of disaster, but most importantly, get real income rising agains after 8 piss poor years under Bush.

Sorry if that's too P&N for you, but those who fail to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it.

Isn't California constitutionally prevented from passing a budget without a supermajority and from raising property taxes?

I know CA has a stupid law that says only a simple majority needed to pass budget incerases but to raise taxs it takes like 3/4 or 66% (something like that)

So easy to spend but not easy to pay for. Not sure why they thought that would be a good idea. Should be the other way around.

All hail GWB for having the smarts to bail out the banks.

Give CA to China to settle our debt bringing our highest importing country and its labor closer to the US. Meanwhile we offload the most worthless hyped state in the union. Bring Puerto Rico in as a real state so we don't have to fix the flag.

Win/Win situation.

Haha if you try and give CA to China youre going to have one of the most powerful areas in the world kicking your ass.

California is concentrated America, debts, military and technology alike.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of.

Wasn't it passed by a proposition?

Wait, they aren't touching police and fire departments? Don't Police Union salaries drain the most out of the city budgets? Cut their salaries, leave the number of police/firemen the same.

LOL... without us big states, all the small poor states would shrivel up and die.

I think it might also help if these services were run a bit more efficiently and competently...

This. I've seen goverment funded places spend retarded amounts of money when not needed, then they complain that they can't afford a 100$ item. I work in a hospital, and it's brutal the money that gets wasted, yet they are unwilling to spend on things that are needed.

For example, they'll spend a million dollars to get some software module for 1 guy, but they refuse to spend 30k on a power fail system for the phones.

Or they'll spend 1 million on equipment, and it sits in a closet, and even gets thrown out years later! Such a waste.

city public works are bad too. I've seen our city salt the roads when there's no snow! They just follow the schedule they have, instead of using common sense. If on Saturday they have to do NN roads, they do it regardless of the weather. Now that is a waste of tax dollars!
