why so the expensive transmitters can blow up instead?

After losing 2 routers and a nic to I realized my cable was the culprit as well. I went out and got a surge with a cable passthrough and havent had a problem since. Anyone with cable should do the same, I had the same setup for a couple years without a problem, then twice within a month or so.

Course not... that's why they say on every episode to not try their experiments at home. Looks like you did so, unwillingly. ;)

Yeah, but I'm a professional/expert, too!

I thought it was common knowledge that it's not uncommon for lightning to strike and fry electronics via ethernet or coax cables?

WOW.

Can i say....WiFi?

Glad I got it, and a 3500 joule surge protector to go along with it.

Is it bad to have a 6 outlet surge protector with two 7 outlet power strips pluged into it, with like almost every plug being used?

Bahahahahah. Makes it much easier to disconnect all your electronics, no?

Wireless is for girls. It's expensive, slow, inherently insecure, and overall inferior. Replacing all my fubarr'd ethernet gear wouldn't even cover the cost of entry for two wireless PCs.

wtf? do you have like a steel desk or something? plastic doesn't conduct... and i don't see how electricity could jump out of the monitor to push you back :S

do you have carpet? many carpet fibers are slightly conductive.

Mythbusters is right most of the time, but they're more for entertainment than anything. Still, though, I've noticed a couple of errors/omissions on their show. Once, I was tempted to write to them with "WRONG", but never got around to it. (nor do I recall which episode it was, but if someone's kind enough to provide a synopsis of every episode, I can scan through them and point out a couple that were wrong.)

That's more likely the culprit, if lightning strikes close enough and the carpet isn't grounded, some (definatly not all) of the EM charge could build up on the carpet, then it's just looking for the shortest path to ground. My guess is the charge went through you to the keyboard. we would need pics of everything to be able to say for sure what happened.
