All depends on what "country" you're talking about.

My parents' current home is worth around $300K, compared to their "city" home's value of $130K.

Come to Buffalo,NY.

You beat me to it, Sammy. You can buy a 4 bedroom house for 500 bucks here. It will probably be a nice victorian house from the turn of the century. And you'll be in walking difference of several different crack dealers too.

A house in a good area will cost about 125 K. For 200 K, you can get a mansion. If you can find work here, Buffalo is one of the top cities to live in. There is plenty of stuff to do, and everything is very cheap.

No surprise.

I live 20 miles from a really expensive area (Palm Springs) . . . yet equivalent houses in my area regularly cost 1/3 - 1/2 as there. Strangely - just referring to climate - mine is a much more pleasant place to live 9 months of the year.

Of course my area is rural and (unfortunately for crowding) the word is getting out (I am planning to buy bare acreage before the year ends as an investment).

EDIT: Oh, yeah . . . I bought my house in 1983 for $25,000 on 2-1/2 acres of land . . . it was a "hot deal" and a decent investment.

Wisconsin is obviously pretty rural, and you can find $30K homes pretty easily. But if you live in Madison, the median price is $188,885. I like Madison, but OUCH! And property taxes on that cost about $3,800/year.

heh I bought a house about 15 years ago for $10,000. Actually it used to to be a big chicken house. But the previous owner started a conversion from chickens to people. lol. Anyways I had project finished and after many other headaches...sold it and I lost a little money.

That was the only estate deal I was ever in where I lost money.

Their house
View from the end of their driveway

The real value is the land, not the house. It's on ~4 acres, the majority of which is covered in trees.

Our next door neighbor's house + land is worth around $1 mil.

Holy Jebus! I didn't know that 20k was pushing it for a house purchase. If I go there to buy a "summer vacation" home, I'll be rolling in luxary I bet.
