Two weeks ago I was pleasantly surprised when Bank of America approved me for a $4,000 Alaska Airlines VISA.

Then I received a pre-approved Capital One Platinum offer via snail mail which I was thinking about accepting, thank goodness I never mailed it off.

Last week I was looking through the junk snail mail I received and found another pre-approved offer from Fleet offering a cc limit of up to $50,000, 0% on purchases through October 2003, no annual fee, no balance transfer fees, and all the usual perks of a VISA Platinum ... I didn't want to wait a week for the decision so I applied online with the invitation number they sent me, imagine my shock when the credit decision came back saying:

APPLY ONLINE: Congratulations!

You have been approved for the Fleet Platinum Visa!

Your total credit limit is $10000.00.
You will receive your credit card and related information in approximately two weeks via U.S. mail.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn!

What's really amusing is when your cerdit limit is greater than your yearly salary. I'm currently a Phd student and have 3 credit cards.
I make $18000 a year and my combined credit limit is $33000.

The bottom line is credit card companies could care less as long as you pay the monthly bill. They'll give you as much rope as you need
to hang yourself.

Granted my credit limit is high, but my balance at the end of each month is $0.

Student loans are a different story.

Actually I will be in Vegas mid August for my one year anniversary, I wish I could charge it to my new $10k Fleet but I'll be charging it on my Alaska Airlines cc to earn miles.

Ross I'm very worried about you. I fear that this time next year your total CC debt will be about $2k higher than it is now :( Get the new card and put it in a block of ice in the freezer.

My friends brother is a stoke broker and before the fall off last year he had people calling him up and asking what they
should buy with $10000. He asked what interest the money was earning now and they said that was the limit on the
new credit card they got. They had credit card debt already and they figured they could get out by "playing" the stock
market.

He told them to take the card to Las Vegas instead.

Heh. "Stoke broker". $10000 from a credit card to the stock market. What are people smokin'? I wonder what the interest rate was.

That said, it seems that credit card companies are desperate for customers these days. I was gonna cancel one Mastercard with a big-@ss limit... so they gave me the option to keep it with a 1.99% "balance transfer". Except that the balance transfer is a simply a loan, credited directly to one's bank acct, with only an extra $10 service charge up front. You can do whatever you want with it. (The loan is only for 3 months though. The 1.99% is per annum, not over 3 months in case you're wondering.)

Things are strange when credit cards have better (short-term) loan interest rates than banks.

hah, Ross I got that same Capital One Plat offer... i was seriously considering sending it in. I don't have a cc but have been thinking it would be nice to have one for those "just in case" times. I'd prolly never even use it, and they wanted a 50$ annual fee... bah.

Eug - CitiBank offered me the same thing except for 3.9% for the life of the loan and I could use the funds anyway I wanted to.

jorken - We had almost the same offers, my Capital One Platinum offer said no annual fee.

Hehehehe pretty far from your 14 000$ with my 800$ credit limit Desjardins Visa Card for students....

Oh well, I guess that when I'll get older, I'll want to have more debts too... (the older, the poorer you are? hehehe)

See ya!

Ross do the balance transfer onto that card and start paying off your cc debt. After you transfer all your balances dont touch that card again until youve paid of its balances. taht way its easy to keep track of how much debt youve paid off.

<< RossMAN: I thought you hated Bank of America? >>

I do and you hate Dell, we all gotta hate someone. Actually I only despise BOFA but I had no choice since that's who Alaska Airlines decided to underwrite their cc's. Staples, now there's a company I really hate. Dell has been really annoying lately but I don't hate them nearly as much as you do.

Ameesh - I might do that since they're offering 9.99% fixed on balance transfers.

i thought it was 0% ? if its not 1.7% or less dont bother, call them up and ask them for a better rate, they should be able to help. Discover got me a 0.9% on balance transfers until the end of july i have been only paying like $5 a month in interest
