OK, I just installed an Epox 8k3a+ and XP 1900+ with a Volcano 7+ heatsink. When booting up my BIOS reads 33 celcius (sweet right?). Then when booting into Windows 2k everything seems to be running great. I install MBM5 and set it to the settings MBM5 homepage says (WinBond2) and it reads at 88 or 89 celcius!!! Holy crap!

When setting it to WinBond 2 Diode I get a reading of 35 celcius to 40 celcius, which makes much more sense to me. My case temp is 30 celcius.

Can someone help me out? I let it sit in BIOS for an hour and the temp never went over 35 celcius, is this a good way to test? When it boots into Windows is it expected to leap 20 celcius or more?

Please help! Thanks!

Winbond-diode enables on die-temp reading via the internal diode. I'm not sure if WInbond2 gives a socket-thermistor reading or another reading (hte Socket-thermistor may be disabled when an internal-diode equipped CPU is installed).

I'd use the diode reading, but dont' be too shocked if the CPU has a 5-10C delta between idle and full load temps.

Bios temps aren't acceptable for comparison, since the CPU load is often unknown (typically 1/2 to 2/3 of full load).

Are you sure the 88-89 isn't Fahrenheit ? 88c=31.11f, so that would be about right. Double check that. And normal temp for that cpu is somewhere around 45-57c under full load. The range depends on what heatsink/fan you are using, and the amient air temperature/case temp. Also, the absolute meltdown temp for that cpu is 90c, so I don't think you saw that. I forgot to put a fan on mine once, and it locked up at 78c. I shutdown, waited 1/2 hour, (after putting the HSF on) and it was Ok luckily. (stupid me)

Yeah, I know the CPU can raise 10 celcius or so under full load, that doesn't concern me. The 88-89 is Celcius, I don't have a clue as to what its reading. Another wierd thing I just tested...

I set the PC Health to shutdown the system down when it reaches 75 celcius or higher. When running MBM5 monitoring temp using the WinBond2 Diode it was running fine, but the second I set MBM5 to monitor the normal WinBond2 my system shut itself off. Is PC Health somehow monitoring my PC using MBM5? I'm kind of confused on this one!

So would you all agree with me that the correct monitor would be Diode and that the BIOS is correct? Does the BIOS read the temp using Diode or something else?

Bios on the 8k3a should read the diode.

As far as the 88-89C, from seeing yoru other thread, that tmep never moves. Which is indicative of a faulty reading. Use hte diode reading, since it is showing CPU temp movement.

OK Mike,

Thanks for the help. Two more questions. Should the heatsink be hot to the touch like that other user said in my other thread? That doesn't really make sense to me. Also, why would the PC shut down when I changed MBM5 to read a different setting, is it because when changing it MBM5 it changes it for the system as well?

Thanks,
Ethan

If your CPU is truely running above 80C, I would say you SHOULD feel at least some heat from the heatsink. It's also possible your heatsink is just contacting the surface of the CPU properly. Have you removed it to make sure that it was?

Yeah, everythings all set. I've been using it for 2 days without any kind of problems. If it were really running at 90 celcius it would of fried out by now :)
