Well I went to court today, got a $400 fine for riding my motorcycle on my own street because I don't have insurance, I was just warming it up before I took it out for some off road riding.

Funny thing is, a guy before me assaulted another guy and beat the bloody pulp out of some guy, and got a $300 fine. And the guy before that had possession of drugs, and had to pay $250. But I was just warming up my bike on my own street and I got a $400 fine for not having insurance? Well I only ride it off road unless i'm warming it up so why would I need insurance? Lets compare it to an 4 wheeler. Do they need insurance? They ride on the streets just as much as I do, just to warm it up.

This is a joke, you can assault innocent people, and use drugs, but if you don't have insurance for an off road motorcycle you get your ass reamed.

$845 fine for playing your car radio too loud here. Blame it on your worthless government for making the fine's too high. :(

The $400 is nothing compared to the million plus you would have to pay out of your pocket if you caused a huge pileup.

But if its an offroad bike, and you were just warming it up... that is pretty stupid.

Heh i'm willing to think that's true!

And my road is totally vacant. Yes there are houses lining up but I am in a dead end on the very last house and NOBODY ever drives down there. So pretty much the only way I would be in a wreck, is if a space alien beamed a car up and dropped it on my head.

No sympathy here. As far as I'm concerned you deserved it. The other guys you mention may have deserved worse, but $400 fine for driving an off road bike on a city street with no insurance is about right IMO.

Lets say you own a 4 wheeler (ATV) and you were warming it up on your dead end street before putting it in the back of your truck to take it out for some offroad riding. You don't need any insurance for these do you? Would a cop have pulled you over? No I think not. This is the exact same situation except I had 2 wheels, not 4.

Heh and you have to know the cops in my area. Just last month two cops were patrolling and then got called to a scene, well don't ask me how this happened but they both flipped a U-turn (in an illegal U-turn street by the way) and they hit each other head on, pretty much putting each vehicle out of commission. Glad to know my money is going towards buying some new tires for them.

Don't get me wrong, cops are good and dandy, they just need to get their priority's straightened out. Oh and the guy who was caught with drugs was supposed to serve 90 days in jail also, but the judge just dropped it and let him get off with $250. This was also that guys 3rd offense. This was my first offense.

Hey, in many places, mere possession of a natural weed called marijuana will put you behind bars for 30 days. This country also kills prisoners under the guise of "capital punishment".

Maybe it was your attitude in front of the judge. He?s probably sick and tired of dealing with people with no insurance, and you?re obviously not remorseful. I said it once before, and I?ll say it again: Don?t ride your uninsured ?off-road? cycle on the public street. To ride on the public street you?re required to carry liability insurance in case you hit somebody or their property. So what if you live on a dead end. Hmn Maybe one of your neighbors called the cops. Yes, the cops would absolutely stop someone on a 3 or 4 wheeler. I?ve seen it before.

About the other cases. Maybe the judge thinks the war on drugs is hopeless and it does no freaking good to put a non-violent person in jail for an ounce of weed or whatever he was carrying. Maybe the guy who beat someone up showed a little remorse, hence no jail time. Just some thoughts. I wasn't there.

Got to agree with Garfang & Eug on this. You knew you were committing a crime-and a stupid one at that. Just because some other joker's got off lighter for their stuff doesn't mean you should.

BTW, what were you convicted of? Sounds like they gave you a break on a couple of charges-like driving an unregistered vehicle, (probable) equipment violations, etc.

Your demeanor and impression on the judge probably had a whole lot to do with it, too.

The only violation was no insurance. And I had no attitude with the judge either, I sat there and took it like a man and didn't complain or anything. You gotta understand, this is the first time i've ever gone to court and was pretty much scared sh!tless and didn't want to piss ANYBODY off.

<edit> oh yeah and it was unregistered because there was no reason to register it, but it got impounded and I had to register it before I could get it out, so the judge asked me if it was registered now and I told him yes and he completely dropped that. The $400 is because of insurance only.

OK, I hear ya. I know this has been an expensive ordeal for you. As I remember, they impounded your cycle. If it wasn't registered then, it is now, or else it's still in the pound. But Man! Warm it up in the drive way or at the trail. Otherwise have your agent add the cycle to your truck policy. Cycle insurance is cheap!

Good luck, dude.

My friend went home to India for the Summer and left his unregistered street cycle in my care. I rode it around Philadelphia all summer long. I got pulled over once, but fortunately for me, I was wearing OR scrubs. The cop assumed I was a doctor and let me go with a warning. I rode it a lot less after that...

If you didn't know, doctors get very few tickets. Basically, cops want to insure that if they arrive at the emergency room at the same time as the guy that shot them, they get treated first. Unethical? Maybe, but it's true.

Yikes 400$ is a lot for no insurance.I think if you return to court with proof of sometimes the judge may drop it,at least in Cal. Nice to know when I visit your state next time and get popped for no insurance that I will be screwing them out of 400 bucks ;)
