In Bradenton, right north of Aphex's Sarasota, I used to golf often on the Manatee County golf course. It had multiple ponds and swamp areas so it had lots of alligators. Sometimes, an alligator would crawl up and sun himself on the greens or fairways. The old people that are always golfing on the course would 'shoe' the alligators away with their golf clubs in hand. The alligators would slowly amble off into the water.

I once saw an old lady (who was looking for her ball) scare a 6ft alligator off the bank of a pond. The old geezers in FL really aren't scared of them.

I remember reading an article where an alligator was found in a NY sewer and it took 4 NY animal rescue workers to remove it. I was thinking they just needed an old woman with a golf club.

Would a 6 foot alligator actually kill you? I would think if you didnt let it drag you into the water all it could do was chew you up a bit.

Gators aren't really something to be afraid of. They really are harmless creatures unless they think you are invading their territory, or if they have young around, or if they have a nest somewhere near. I think they are a beautiful creature.

Exactly, gators generally won't bother people and will usually avoid them. That is, unless some old retiree in Florida starts feeding one, then it loses its fear of people and becomes a problem - they learn to associate people with food. When my kids were 5 or 6 years old, we were fishing in a small canal near Orlando. A gator kept swimming right up to the shore where we were. (and ate one of the fish we caught and released which made it even more aggressive.) We had to give up fishing after a little while. A resident there explained that the old guy at the end of the block kept feeding him. The people in the trailer park didn't want him to get in trouble though, so they didn't report it.

Gators have a long tongue visible when they open their mouth. Crocodiles do not. Just pull the jaws apart, stick your head in, and check.

One time I was up in Wakulla, near Talahassee, and swimming in the wakulla river, and a gator swam by me no further than 5 feet away, I had thought it was a long originally, turned out to be a gator just minding his own business.

You should swim with a knife!
