Holy crud, I'm finding GOOD contractors.

We're doing a TON of work on a house that we own and I plan on moving into, and I've been on a roll with finding honest, efficient companies to do a lot of the work.

For example, I needed to get rid of the godawful acoustic ceilings, but needed to test the place for asbestos as it was built in 1948 (the ceiling wasn't added till 198x but still..

Anyway, I called a half dozen abatement companies looking for quotes to test for asbestos. Two of them wanted $400-500 (!) for testing, another wanted $69.95 but the guy couldn't speak english, and yet another only wanted $38 but told me to bring in the sample myself. Finally the first company I called (left a message) called me back with a quote of $125, and the guy took the time to thorougly explain the where, why, and how they test, and that they needed THREE samples as required by law, which the other companies failed to mention.

So the next morning, the guy comes by, scrapes off a few samples, warns me of other potential hazards, and by THAT EVENING, he had faxed me the test results (no asbestos, thank goodness).

I'm having similar luck with our kitchen contractor, painter, electrician, and deck rebuilder. It's nice finding companies that actually do good work without being ripoff artists. 🙂

It's nice to find honest people when you are getting work done that you aren't familiar with.

Off topic, is there a modern equivalent to Asbestos? One that hasn't been found to tear holes in your lungs, anyway.

not to mention that it will KILL you...
Only during prolonged exposure. If you're in a bathroom or a furnace closet, say for maybe 10-15 minutes and there is asbestos insulation, it's not harmful. It gets to be harmful when there is airborne asbetos AND you're spending a lot of time in such an area. But, like I said, in most cases it's not dangerous if not inhaled.
