It's the largest source of piracy and copyright infringment that I know of.

Really depends on the ISP. I've been constantly downloading 300-400GB per month from Usenet for the past 6 years, not a single peep from Bell Sympatico. But friends also on Sympatico using BT have received cease and desist letters just weeks after downloading high profile files.

Back in the 90s it was great. I spent a lot of time on the guitar and photo groups. But most of my favorite groups got overrun by insane idiots and stupid juvenile flame wars that literally dragged on for years. The learning curve isn't that much higher. I think the main reason is because there are very few free service that has good retention... and most people need to subscribe to another like Giganews inorder to really take advantage of it.

As for it making it easier for leechers... who cares?

I do use the NG's though. for porn and information. there ar ea few woodworkign groups where you can get free plans. also alt.home.repair is a great place for help.
