Tragedy aside, it's a weird feeling to realize we're not always at the top of the food chain..

"Neighbours had raised the alarm when they saw the black bear approach. Esther's mother rushed her two other children inside the bungalow but when she dashed back for the baby the pushchair was empty."

How do you "rush" kids inside, but leave the baby? Tell the kids to run and grab the baby at the same time........

We're far from the top of the food chain. Our intelligence and emotions make us a formidable destructive force in the world around us, but at our basic level, we're no more special or powerful than the predator next to us.

Leave baby unattended....bad. Almost as bad as leaving a child in a car with windows up on a hot day.

Hey, it easy to say that now. When a bear comes at your three kids, and you only have two hands, panic can set in.

Surprisingly, we're not. We can fight (with basic weapons, of course) quite well.

Anyone read Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn?

That's way harsh and a bad analogy, IMO.

if we start using weapons, we are no longer at our basic levels.

maybe if you were in an urban area... but it says upstate new york. and lets face it, i seriously doubt "getting snatched by a bear" would be even thought of by a parent. i don't really blame the mom for this.

Bleck, I disagree totally. You can't define "human" without including someting about using tools. Now whether a human is at his "basic level" holding a shotgun or a stick is another matter, but I didn't evolve from some stupid simian to be told that at my "basic level" I can't go grab a big stick and a rock. Heck, even a crow can make a tool.

(Note on that evolution comment -- it was designed more for effect than accuracy -- humans are not thought to have evolved from simians, they are just thought to have a common ancestor)

Yeah, w/o tools we get ownzed, with tools we kick some derrier. And when you add in the fact that we tend to pack hunt, we can slaughter.

That is exactly what I was thinking.

The mother is probably wondering why she didn't do that. No doubt she's going through the "Why didn't I..." and "What if ..." stage as we speak.
