I'm leaving on a road trip today and I wanted to figure out my toll amount on the PA Turnpike. I calculated the toll at the website, and I get this:

Your Toll Amount is $12.50 AND $3.00 Cash Toll at Gateway

Your mileage is approximately 240.6

You've got to be kidding me! :|

I expect ZERO potholes and an overly-courteous toll taker for that kind of money!

Absolutely not. I paid like 27.50 EURO to some extremely angry Italian outside Milan. We'd only been on the toll road like 80 miles.

Tolls in Europe damn near bankrupted me! :p

Toll roads simply don't exist where I'm from (Oregon) but I've travelled the PA Turnpike several times & it's not too bad. It's actually well maintained, relatively straight, & moves fast... Which is rare, to say the least, for PA.

Hehehe, when they put the tolls up, they said they would take them down once the thing was paid off. I guess that's why they keep working on it! That thing has to be a cash cow.

Edit: I wouldn't mind paying all the time either if in exchange for my toll they didn't put cops on it to catch speeders!

yeap. they claimed the same thing in IL. but they won't take it down because to much revenue is made.

Fortunately for you... the turnpike is not run by PENNDOT (yeah I work for the guys with the standup shovels)... but um... the turnpike wastes all their money on salt and toll colectors (i think those bastards get almost $15 per hour to stand in the booth and collect tolls) If you could make a puddle on the dry turnpike road after a snowstorm... you could um swim in the ocean.

Potholes arent too bad.... but if your crossing state... be prepared to pass at least 4-6 cops in each direction and they do use aircraft too... so dont get a ticket.

80 80/90 in Ohio is relatively inexpensive for the speed and the quality of the roads. from 480 to Indiana its $5.75.

PA is just expensive because its SOOOOOOO frickin long.

i'm pretty sure they get paid more than $15/hr...$18.50/hr maybe? Or maybe i'm making that number up, but I remember something like that in my friend's AIM profile

The worst thing about the PA Tpk is the seams in the road - if you drive anything other then a luxo-boat you'll be treated to a steady thrum-thrum every other second or so from start to finish.

That's what you get on the oldest toll road in America! It's not annoying, it's, um, history.

Florida Turnpike from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to north of Orlando, FL where the turnpike ends and merges w/ I-75 (~250 miles) used to cost $12.40. If anything, it may be higher now.

The North Dallas Tollway is about 20 miles long. Each trip will cost you $.75 * 3 = $2.25

I win....

He's coming from MI, which means going through OH, where I-80 has similarly high tolls.

i dont find it that expensive, you try to go through Chicago and you end up paying $5 for 10 miles...

he could always do I80/90 to 90 to?? or 80/90 to 80 to 480 back to 80 if he really wanted to save money..

Depends which section.

at one time it was all concrete... but since it is over35 years old the concrete is wearing out. the turnpike commission is in preparation and partial construction for a complete restoration of the entire road. However until that time, some sections have/will be asphalted over to repair/prevent cracks and potholes. The complete restoration is expected to take abot 6-8 years.
